I agree it's important to worry about the present and stack your roster as much as possible, however, there can be unintented consequences as well. Players like Lewis and Griffin are two giant building blocks for our future. Land a grad transfer like Mooney and they are all but removed from the rotation next year. You can't help but worry about them being POd they were recruited over and transferring out. Even if they stick with the program hard to develop riding the bench. At the end of the day you have to recruit as much talent as possible.

Yet Nova was able to somehow convince 6 guys on this years roster to take a redshirt at some point during their college career so far. They seemed to happy and also develop just fine riding the bench. IMO, if we bring in Mooney for example, it wouldn't hurt for Lewis to take a red shirt. He would more than likely see plenty of playing time in his last 3 years of eligibility if he did. I don't think he will play that much next year anyway, I really don't.

A borderline rotation guy? Yeah, he should save his redshirt for if he wants to transfer.

What is the difference between sitting out with a redshirt or redshirting at one school, then transferring to another. It all depends on how much playing time he will get this year. If he gets a lot. Then redshirting makes no sense. If he don't play that much, then a redshirt would not hurt either way. He would still have to sit out a year. Although, now with the new rules that might take effect. He could use his redshirt this year, then if transfers are immediately eligible, he would be stronger and more mature and could compete right away on a new team. Lot's of factors to go through. I doubt he redshirts. Last year would have been a perfect redshirt year for him to be honest.

Asking any player who is expecting a respectable role to Red Shirt could easily lead to that player deciding to take that RS at another school. Especially since there is always the possibility another player is recruited over you during that year sitting out.

Personally, I am much higher on a former Top 100 recruit who looked to be gaining confidence in his play/shot once he got consistent minutes to end the year. He was a freshman and had an adjustment period, much like a number of great ISU players had to endure. I fully expect Lewis to be in the top 8 rotation next year, continue his growth and likely starting as a Junior.

With Kentucky getting EJ Montgomery, I wouldn't be surprised to see a kid like Killeya-Jones transfer. Also wouldn't be surprised to see Jemari Baker transfer either because he will just keep getting recruited over with 5 stars.

The difference is the time spent with the new team.
If a guy transfers, he mostly likely wants to spend as much time as possible with the new school. Redshirting during the sit out year allows him to practice with the team, learn the system, etc. while not losing eligibility.

Lewis will play off the bench next year and I would bet he will be the best shooter and very important player for us his last 2 years. Not sure why people expected him as a true freshman to be as good as Wiggington who is a 5 Star player. Even Lard sat out a year which probably helped his game considerably.

After Naz Longs freshman year had you told me he'd up being one of my favorite Cyclones ever I would have told you you're crazy. Point being you never know how a player will develop between that crucial freshman and soph season. Lewis has a chance to be a special shooter in a 6'5" frame which is hard to find. If he elevates his game I think Prohm expands the rotation to 8-9 guys and Lewis has some special moments next year.

And there it is Good call...

On Monday morning, Kentucky added a top 15 recruit in 6-foot-10 E.J. Montgomery.

On Monday afternoon, Kentucky lost a former top 25 recruit in 6-foot-11 Sacha Killeya-Jones.

I think he would work great in the right offense. Cal for as good of recruiter as he is, isn't the best coach. Killeya-Jones will be highly sought after and it would be awesome if ISU could get involved but not betting on it. I think he ends up in the ACC.

Killeya-Jones sounds like he will turn pro just by the wording. Could be wrong. He said he wants to explore other opportunities. Not that he wanted to transfer. WE shall see.

Update with Matt Mooney. Not much of a mention of ISU other than an assistant visitied him. There is major competition for him and he identified 5+ other coaches who already have his attention. He hasn't cut his list but I wouldn't get my hopes up for ISU at this point.

"I haven’t set up any visits yet, but I’ve been texting and talking with coach [Greg] McDermott and coach [Chris] Beard and the assistant from Arizona State,” Mooney said. “I think I’ll visit those three. I think for sure I’ll visit Texas Tech. Probably Northwestern and Oregon.”

UNI landed a transfer today out of Pepperdine. Kid is originally from Minnesota.
Can't find much info on him. 6'5" guard. Played about 5 games this year; averaged 10 points. Scored 13 agains St Mary's twice and 9 against Gonzaga.

Looks to be a decent pick up for UNI and a kid we'll play against a couple times.

UNI campus might be a little underwhelming coming from Pepperdine. Beautiful place
