Refs were terrible. No getting around that, but I'm beyond irritated when we don't adjust to how the game is being called.

Lipsey put himself in position to pick up two senseless fouls. They were weak calls, but with how the game was called and with how Tamin had similar issues, he failed to adjust again. It resulted in our most effective player sitting on the bench. The body fouls by Grill was also stupid and that was a clear foul. Osun got screwed a lot, but we did a poor job of adjusting.

We rebounded well on the overall but lost about 4 rebounds where players senselessly competed with teammates. At least 3 of those botches resulted in points. Might have been the difference.

After a ton of first half turnovers we were much better with the ball. Lipsey had a great game, but went timid in the final few minutes. Jones probably had his best game in a while, although offensive decision making and some loose ball gaffes were rough. Holmes did a great job of getting to the lane but was horrendous on defense. A lot of our lapses, especially in the first half, came from him not fighting through screens, closing out late, and being out of position. Kunc didn't look as rusty and we hit the majority of our FTs.

We missed a big opportunity when we had momentum, had an easy rebound opportunity, and BRE goes over the back of a teammate to knock the ball out of bounds. WVU retains possession and scores. If there was a turning point late, outside the blown layup, I think that was it

Ok State 23 fouls against ISU. Texas Tech 28 fouls against and tonight 30.

Pretty much tells the story
I do think the coaches will be trying to figure out how to adjust to guard teams that drive the ball hard (often teams that don't have a lot of great shooters) without fouling. The zone in the last 10 minutes tonight was decent at that, but I think we have to be able to do it in man-to-man, too.

I have read none of this thread, but the fact we had any possible chance with 10 minutes left much less 30 seconds is a miracle.

I just see a bad trend continuing. We’re now only 2 wins out of the last 6 games. Have not won on the road in over a month. Only Tech has a longer road losing streak.
Yeah, this season is a broken record, beat the 96 Bulls in Ames, turn around 3 days later and choke against the bottom feeders of the league. This is why we'll finish 2 games out of first when the season is over.

4.5 point spread. I’m sorry to say it, but I do question this just like I felt vs TTU. One way to control a game is fouls. The reversed calls. Seemed like any time we had a chance

4.5 point spread.

Wouldn’t the refs be better off helping the underdog (Iowa State) for better odds?

Team has to learn to adjust. We were close but just couldn't get one more shot. Hoping these are lessons learned that well pay off in March. Gotta fight through bad officiating.
They MIGHT have been able to play through bad officiating tonight. THAT was NOT bad officiating.

wat? so you're saying that there's not statistical correlation between a higher seed and a higher achievement in the tournament, based just on last year's result? i'm only trying to say that the better the seed, the better the chance we have at the Elite 8. i know every game matters, but we needed* a good, manageable road win here that we didn't get. this will hurt us.

EDIT: *really could have used
That’s exactly what I am saying. Yes statistics show a better seed equals a chance at a further run but there is zero guarantee that happens. Do I need to bring up Hampton and UAB? Do I need to bring up Saint peters or Loyola or VCU or George Mason or the countless other double digit seeds or low seeds that made runs to the final four let alone the elite eight?

In the end you have to play the damn game and no statistic is going to help you win in March. This team can play with anyone, and we can lose first round. Get in and let’s see what happens. Plenty of teams have made magical runs. Why not our turn?

And to tonight’s manageable road game that we “had to have”…WVU was favored and most everyone picked them to cover the spread.

They lose their minds a bit in waning moments.

It would be nice if they could find another away win to shake it but that window is closing.

Teams drive it when ISU is at home as well. Is it it they cannot communicate switches on the road? Because apparently they avoid fouls in Hilton

Darius Bieber is not an ISU fan, along with isuno1fan. They only post when something bad happens to ISU

Amazing neither has gotten the banhammer. Especially Darius. He'll be nonexistent in game threads when things are going well and then magically appear if momentum swings the other way

The same UConn that just dominated #10 last night?
Damn it don’t you know teams at the beginning of the season are the exact same as they are at the end!?!? No team improves or declines throughout the year! That’s preposterous!

Getting the yips in big moments may be the thing does them in for a close tourney game or something.

The refs were awful and it was a weird game but missing on the fast break, not securing rebounds etc were missed chances to still win.

I'm guessing Saturday is a loss with mismatches all over.
Man if Grill just made that layup we could be having a different convo right now. Actually they probably would have called another foul and lost on free throws. It's just crazy how often in the big 12 the last 10 years or so the home team normally comes out on top. I would be shocked if they lost another home game or won another road game this year.

The 1999-2000 ISU team would like to have a word with you

Even that game the bad officiating was just down the stretch. Tonight was bad the first ten minutes than pretty much the entire second half. ISU was the significantly better team in the second half.

WVU is not a better team, they got a helping hand the entire way. For whatever reason it is just a hellhole of a place to play.

You could’ve called them for 10-20 extra fouls just on fouls where they literally grabbed and held a guy. In a game where they foul out half of ISU’s team, those calls have to be made or it’s no longer a sport, some kind of scripted fake reality show.
