Not QUITE scientific. But with millions of Facebook users out there, this is probably more thorough than most any other possible national fan poll:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/10/03/upshot/ncaa-football-fan-map.html?_r=0&abt=0002&abg=1

As a firm believer that NCAA football is definitely a business ultimately being driven by $$$, my two personal takeaways on this:

  1. Guess this is why U. Texas far leads the country with a $166M annual athletic program. Of that $38M in contributions and $110M of that generated from just football. Just the licensing from all that burnt orange around that huge region down here contributed $59M alone - nearly the size of ISUAD's entire 2013 budget.
  2. Iowa is still a Hawkeye state :-( I was disappointed to see this, especially western Iowa. But I suppose that is why EIU is 11th overall with a $107M program. Well over double ISU's contributions with $31M and still nearly double the ticket revenue of Iowa State. Interesting the Hawk faithful only generate ~$9M more in licensing/royalties than ISU's $30M last year.

FWIW.

I highly dought 37% of Ames is Hawkeye fans. Have to take some of it with a grain of salt. We all get Iowa is a larger fanbase and has more fans, but the gap isn't nearly what it used to be.

It is probably a fairly accurate map.

The whole Hawk fans owning the state thing doesn't bother me as much as Idiot SW IA rednecks that have never been to Nebraska cheering for the Huskers. I can't stand that.

Wow, I thought the % of ISU and Iowa would be closer in Polk and Dallas counties.

Interpret this map as a 51-49 thing not a 100% except around Ames. And as for bloated budgets. Iowans should be embarrassed for the amount of money pumped into the rat hole Iowa City for what they get versus Iowa State's super efficient lower budget program. Which is really more Iowan in virtue?

If you scroll in on the map for NC, it's odd that the Tar Heels not only don't carry any counties, are also not listed in any top three of those counties there.

Yeah there are definitely flaws in their process somewhere

Worried about Oregon Duck fans in northern Iowa inclu Waterloo and the Texas fans in the Omaha/CB area. They sound disgruntled with the local schools.

How do they limit that to football. Because I highly doubt that the overwhelming part of Kansas is discussing the jayhawks over the wildcats in football.

I take it you don't read the articles in Playboy either ;-)

"Note: Facebook has a discovered a coding error with its data for North Carolina, and we expect to have corrected data soon."

They do allude a little bit to their methods:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/26/upshot/answering-readers-questions-about-the-baseball-maps.html

But I agree it's not clear if all you have to do is like the main university's FB page, like any of potentially dozens of athletic pages, or specifically the football program's page like:

Guys, again, it's not a scientific poll of all 3 million Iowans. But the Facebook numbers themselves are not lying. You can even see yourself that as of today the ISU Athletics fan page has 132K Likes . . . whereas the Iowa Hawkeyes page has 539K Likes.

Think of it this way - this at least means that a larger portion of Iowa FB users are actively seeing news and other babble coming from official EIU pages on FB than from ISU's pages <-- That promotes interest, brand loyalty, etc, which ultimately brings in $$$ to keep a program from struggling. ISU is still on the cusp of struggling - otherwise we'd still have things like a baseball team playing the other 9 Big XII schools ;-)

One thing that I question is what about people who like both. I know I like one of their pages. I don't remember why I think it was when likes on your page were more relevant so I liked all of the schools. That may be a big part of it as well.
