I was always curious about the effects of Omaha being targeted which is the most likely candidate around Iowa to be nuked by a missile.

Actually, no - the most likely target is Davenport (considering Rock Island Arsenal sits right in the middle of the Mississippi River) - it's generally assumed we've had our very own nuke pointed in our direction going way back to the beginnings of the cold war.

What about Minot AFB in N. Dakota, and all the missile silos buried in wheat fields? It isn't exactly "close" to Iowa, but I would think it would hold some sort of strategic value.

Considering the Soviets had something like 2000+ nukes, I'm pretty sure that Davenport, Minot, Omaha, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Ames, etc. all had nukes pointed at them with plenty left over to aim at big targets like New York and Washington.

three-fold benefit on joining the mormons

just think,

First, you'll have saved -your- hide from the nuke in IC,

second,
you realize a nuke can't kill a hawk (they've been radioactive since birth)
so they'll be practically 100 % of the population, and even if you could
survive they'll be like LICE. With no normal folks around they
won't even feel the need to use a bathroom for procreation,

EEWWW..

and lastly, the icing on the cake, I'm figuring the nukes'll probably
have given Mama Moo a headache for life so the second and third
sweety I gain on account of the polygamy thing will be a HUGE bonus!

I thought Ames had been pretty high on the list at one time because of some of the research that was being done here. I do know that at one time that the Quad Cities were suspected to be as high as the number 3 target.

OK I guess not I just figured because of the SAC base in Omaha that'd be the most high profile strategic target around here.

My high school chemistry teacher was from Rock Island and he always used to talk about how the Quad cities were one of the top nuclear targets. He always said they were number 3, but I guess he could have been misinformed.

I heard 11th from my father, who has spent the last 25 years working at the Rock Island Arsenal, as well as part of his career at the Pentagon before that. Maybe we were #3, but I trust the #11 more.

well just because your information comes from someone who has actually worked there and mine comes from someone who lived there like 30 years ago, it doesn't mean that my information is any less accurate!!!!!:jimlad:

You're not just talking to someone whose dad actually worked there, but who works there himself, his mom also works there, his sister works there, a number of his friends work there...
