This paper had some backhanded slaps at ISU in the days leading up to the Pinstripe bowl hoping they'd get A&M or Mizzou instead. Now that we're picked, this came out today. They're assuming that ISU has no fanbase, nobody will come to support ISU, and the ISU name on the jersey isn't a draw for Rutgers fans to come out for.

I understand their concerns, but how about they see who shows up before dissing ISU.

RU Football: More to LOSE than Gain in Pinstripe Bowl | NJ.com

Rutgers versus Iowa State is announced. You say, "What round of the women's NCAA tournament are we in?" No...not the Women's NCAA...the Pinstripe Bowl.

The problem with this is Iowa State coming to NYC does not add a huge opinion from Rutgers fans that this is a must see. The fans will have to brave the weather, which hopefully will be unseasonably warm, to go see a Rutgers team that ended the season without any form of punch. Likewise, Iowa State ended their last two games with two losses as well, though against much better competition than Rutgers. Still, both ended the season with a down note rather than a positive one and the only selling point behind Iowa State was their upset of Oklahoma State which removed OSU from the National Championship.

With that, the biggest number that matters, the attendance figures, will have to be high on the Rutgers side because I'd think Iowa State wouldn't be traveling in the 15,000 range the weekend of New Year's. Rutgers will NEED to sell out and bring in a TON of extra fans to justify to other bowls that they deserve the bowl opportunities. They must fill the stadium to show the Big East and New York community that it's worth it for them to have Rutgers at future Pinstripe bowls rather than taking Pitt, Syracuse, UConn or other local teams.

We will need to have about 30,000 fans at the bowl in order to guarantee hitting the Syracuse figure from last year (38,274).

-------

What do you guys think? The author is assuming that neutral New York fans + ISU fans will be less than 8,000 people. Does ISU bring 5,000 or less to the game?

I don't think Kstate brought much more than 8 thousand. So if Rutgers wants to think they're better fans than Syracuse, Rutgers is gonna have to bring about the same figure.

Not sure how many we will bring, but pretty sure it will be more than Missouri would have brought, which was the other alternative. A&M was not a choice since Car Bowl selected them before Pinstripe.

If KSU only sold 3,200 last year and they are worried about ISU this year, just another sign that this is a stupid bowl for the Big 12 to be part of.

Nice! They may not be thrilled with playing Iowa State, but it works both ways. How do they think we feel having to go to NY to play New Jersey State.

Let's show up and cheer our team on to victory. If they want to whine about it, let 'em.

Good catch on K-State tickets sold last year. I wondered how much it was.

They were alloted 2,300 and sold 3,200.

I'm with you though. ISU will buy more tickets to this bowl than Mizzou would have.

I'm tired of people dissing ISU when K-State's totals weren't that impressive either. I'd even like to know how many tickets a frustrated Aggy fanbase would've sold to NYC with their 6-6 record.

Honestly, it seems more like a criticism of a poorly conceived bowl than anything specific about ISU. I don't know who thought that agreeing to be eighth in line with a poor football venue, far away conference, and expensive date and location was a great idea. This bowl really should have been a Big East vs. Big Ten/ACC/MAC game and would imagine that's what they had in mind when they conceived the game. Having a Big 12 team in this bowl would only really ever be a success if they snagged a national name or a really hot team. That's never going to happen with their place in the pecking order though.

I know we all want to see ISU get respect nationally and it stings when we don't see it. We all see progress being made and think the rest of the world should acknowledge it too. But I don't think anyone should be real up in arms about this.

Frankly, Big East is basketball, and if I read ISU to play Rutgers in post-season, I would think it was a Bill Fennelly, Vivian Stringer match-up.

i agree with the part about it being a stupid big 12 affiliate. like the bowl, but there is no interest in any Big 12 school, playing any Big east school at all...

I mean even our best teams vs there best teams would have no interest.

Obviously you did not read this board last night.......... cold bowls suck and hamburgers coast $30 in NYC.

Read the threads on scarletnation.com. Nearly everyone there is giving ISU respect. That said, the blogger is correct that Rutgers needs to outdraw Syracuse. Not that it would garner any respect, it'll just be one less thing that the media will be able to bash Rutgers about.

In addition, the Star-Ledger will do pretty much anything to try and get readership numbers. Theres a reason why the paper is known among Rutgers fans as the "Star-Liar".

Gee, why all this hitting at the Big East? And if the league is so bad, why did we take West Virginia as a new Big 12 member?
