This is a case of a national writer being lazy and only looking at what a team is losing and not looking at who is going to actually be on the team. Iowa State will finish with a better record than this year and advance just as far in the tournament.

Next year will probably be a continuation of Hoiball: 4 guard type players and a forward. Our tallest returning player with minutes is 6-4. The problem I have with this system is that you are always out-rebounded and you can't defend the paint. This has been our biggest weakness for several years now. So if our starters are Naz, Matty, Morris, Burton (a guard), and Ernst (unknown ability) we are going to be manhandled in the post and we will again be hoping to make up the difference shooting 3's. IMHO we should not expect consistent results from jump shots - there are too many cold streaks. Defense, rebounds, and layups have more consistency. So i think we need 2 guys on the floor who are at least 6-7 . That's not asking a lot.

While height helps with rebounding it isn't everything. If Burton works on positon and boxing out he seems like he has the body to hit the boards. McKay was 7' but couldn't rebound because he wouldn't put his body into someone.

If you mean he's coming off the bench you're crazy. If you mean being the heat check then yes.

how? Morris, Thomas, Burton, Bowie, Malou could easily be the starting lineup. Not far-fetched.

...be strange to watch without Niang.

And will ill be a very different team. I think we can be middle of the Big 12 which will get us into the tournament.

Actually, at the risk of being bashed by half of this board, I'd take that right now. Middle of the big 12. Because I still believe we have not only great coaches in the Big12, but the other teams (like KU,OU, WV, Baylor, etc) have good players still back and some good recruits coming in (better than people think). Besides, am I the only one who is excited about Malou BUT ...still feels he'll need time to work his way into being a big12 starter muchlesss guard the '5' position? Still hoping for that 1 more grad transfer 'true big'. Keeping our streak going of getting into the NCAA tournament (then see what happens) would be my biggest wish. Should be an interesting offseason.

The Big 12 is going to become a guard oriented league even more in the future because WV, TX, and OSU are all three going to play beat you up pressure basketball. We have the potential to have a historically good guard court next year.

My hope for next year is we have enough athletes to rebound and play defense, or you sit on the bench. This year, we had no alternatives. As Melvin showed us, you do not need to be 7 feet to rebound.

I am excited to see how Bowie, Young, Malou fit in with Ernst and who else will transfer in, but I remember an article written about Malou where he said he thought he was a 3, not a 5, we will see.

Last, I recently saw a picture of Ernst standing next to McKay and Ernst looked 2 inches taller and 50 pounds heavy than McKay. I hope next year he plays bigger and stronger than McKay.

It's also not far fetched based on Prohm's history that Burton could play the 4 and go with a small athletic lineup. I just don't see two newcomers breaking into this lineup. Perhaps if Ernst solidifies the 5 and Malou takes the 4 we'll see a 3 guard lineup. I just think with this potential depth of guards that we'll see a system that will exploit that speed to make up for a likely lack of size.

I think Ernst was kind of a late addition to add depth. I could see him looking into another opportunity if he felt like he could get more playing time.

ISU will probably never make it past the sweet 16 until they get 2 or 3 high quality board crashers to protect the rim. The old saying "live by 3's die by 3's" remains true.

I will be the first to say this, I have no freaking idea what the starting lineup will be or who will be here or who will transfer. I do think that Prohm will have this team playing very good ball by March and we will make a run to at least the Sweet Sixteen again.

We did not live or die by the 3 against Virginia nor did we all year. We died by lack of defense and rebounding. We actually shot the ball very well in that game. I do agree that we need rebounders though.

Yes we lose a few starters, but here's an interesting thing to think about. The following players, who are projected to be on next year's team, would have played this season, had they been on the team. In order of significance:
Malou
Naz Long
Donovan Jackson
Darrel Bowie
Salomon Young

That's a whole lineup of guys that could have contributed this year.

I'm very impressed with Young from his highlight video. Is he a legitimate threat from 3?
