Wait a minute... You bust his balls for liking boneless wings citing masculinity and being a true carnivore as main reasons.. Then you make a statement about enjoying a restaurants rabbit food. Seems a little bit contradictory...

That was kind of the point of the post. Glad to know you got the joke.

Ames does not need another burrito place. Three is enough.

Aren't there already four?

Qdoba - South Duff
Panchero's - South Duff
Fighting Burrito - Lincoln Way (soon to be on Welch, in the old DQ location?)
Mr. Burrito - Lincoln Way (old Pita Pita location)

No - the city council is the biggest problem. There are many establishments that would be in Ames but for the council and their consistently anti-growth policies.

Seriously, the people of Ames have been screwed over time and again by the anti-growthers on the city council.

I'd say that the city council WAS the biggest problem. It isn't now. Now the biggest problem is the economy. This council is basically pro-development other than the gyro/Fighting Burrito guy. IMO the economy is the only thing holding this council back.

All the chain (cough) restaurants mentioned in this thread have one thing in common. They are eminently forgettable.

You won't get an argument from me there, although I do like some BWW wings from time to time. I just don't get the whole "I hope we don't get an Olive Garden" sentiment. A place like that reduces the wait for places that you DO want to go to.

In other news, there is going to be a new drunk food stand on welch.... but for the asian market.

Don't have many details, just know that it was approved by city council, and a couple of Korean guys are planning on selling a type of marinated beef roll thing, along with a few other asian likes.

Ames does not need an Olive Garden.

Ames does not need a Chipotle.

Other suggestions are good. There seems to be more eating options in Ames than when I was in school, and we never were able to hit everything available.

That said, there's still less food options than need be.

Agree with you except for the OG comment. I really, really, dislike the OG but parents visiting their kids, guys taking girls on dates, and surrounding communities like Huxley and Kelley would like for there to be one on South Duff.

They live close enough to Ames/Ankeny, why not try and get them to come to Ames and spend their money? The Ames area loses a lot of money with people going to the DM metro area for dinner/shopping.

Olive Garden blows, that would suck if it went in.

Yeah, because business that would generate tax revenue for the city of Ames are such a horrible idea. I mean, weren't we just complaining about Ames City Council's past anti-business expansion policies have really hurt Ames?

Just because you hate a particular restaurant does not mean it's a bad idea and would totally suck if it goes in. I think people are horribly mistaken if they think Olive Garden is fine Italian cuisine, howev, a lot of those people exist and will be generating a lot of revenue for Ames if one is located there.

Exactly. I think that you see in this thread some of the attitude that has held Ames back. "I" don't need an Olive Garden, therefore Ames doesn't need an Olive Garden. That's BS to me. I personally don't care for OG all that much, but I have been dragged down to WDM by the wife to go there on a few occasions. Ames needs to give people in town and the surrounding communities a reason NOT to drive to Ankeny/DM. That means bringing in a Kohls, Old Navy, maybe a Slumberland, Olive Garden, Chilis, BWW, Outback, Hooters, etc. Maybe a lot of people think those chains are crappy and boring, but many people do like them. And they give people enough variety and options to come/stay in Ames rather than drive another 20 minutes down the road. I may not be an Olive Garden or Chilis regular, but if they reduce my wait at Hickory Park from 20 minutes to 5 or reduce that line at Great Plains by 1/2, I'm all for them coming in.

Next time your wife wants to go to DSM for Italian, skip Olive Garden and go directly to the South Side. Thank me later.

Is it bad that I was born and raised in the DSM area, then spent 6 years in Ames, and this is the first time I have ever heard of Kelley? Yeah, pulling in the Kelley market is critical for the retail sector in Ames.

If we're going to get a chain restaurant I would prefer a steak joint like Texas Roadhouse, Outback, etc. As stated, Olive Garden is not good Italian whereas the steak joints usually provide a decent steak and sides.

I heard, cant remember where, that Buffalo Wild Wings was coming to Ames soon. No proof it would be infront of target, but that wouldnt be a terrible location for it.

great, just what Ames needs. A bunch of more chain restaurants and stores so they can be just like every other urban sprawlville in this country. Take a hint from Iowa City on this one and keep the chains out as much as possible. They don't have any problem with people going to Coralville and Ames shouldn't worry about people going to Ankeny. There are VERY few college towns left. Want to know what sprawl and chains can do to a town? Compare Fort Collins, CO now and 20 years ago. Or Bozeman, MT.
