As a kid growing up in the 2000s and falling in love with ISU, this brought tears to my eyes. I still remember thinking we were good in football and basketball throughout my childhood but in reality we were mediocre at best and usually bad or just flat out horrible. We truly are living in the best time to be Iowa State Cyclone fans and I'm going to enjoy every single minute of it.

Our debates on this website for 15 years, outside of 1-2 seasons has always been “can we get to 6 wins and a bowl”. When we beat WV last weekend, it wasn’t until the next day that I realized we were bowl eligible. And frankly, I didn’t care. That’s how special this season is and how Campbell has changed expectations here.

Everyone loves to rip on the national media, but here's an example of a guy who got it completely right.

JP is probably the only AD in America who can be honest about what's going on, as he clearly DGAF about any consequences. Everyone else is trying to keep it PC to keep their job so they can one day make the big bucks in the b10 or SEC.

That was a pretty awesome article. I think the only angle it left out is how the ISU coaches themselves pretty much all come from humble D3 beginnings.

None of their coaching careers were born on 3rd base. They've all climbed the mountain the hard way. No escalators. That's where the winning culture begins.

The head coach learned how to climb at the best possible place, Mt. Union, and now he's trying to build his own version of Mt. Union in Ames, Iowa.

• Coach Matt Campbell has had to play 11 linebackers because of injuries. The current starters are redshirt freshman walk-on Rylan Barnes, sophomore Kooper Ebel and true freshman Beau Goodwin. All played at Class A Iowa high schools (the smallest division). The combined populations of their three hometowns is 8,500, according to the Des Moines Register.

"You feel sometimes like it's 'Apollo 13,'" defensive coordinator Jon Heacock said of the injuries. "You remember how they dumped that box of parts out and said ['fix it']? You just keep grinding. You just keep going."

ISU athletics is very fortunate to have JP at the helm. I can't imagine where we'd be without all of his tenacity, energy, and vision in bringing ISU athletics forward to this point. When he talks about being built for the "rough side of the mountain" he's right. Replacing him someday will not be easy.

I love the timing of this article.

My first thoughts (after some watery eyes) was 'oh ****' we better show up well the rest of the year. I thought, well shoot, you think this is good, wait until you see how this all looks in Feb/Mar when we have some hardware from football to show and our BB teams are getting ready to dance. Not to mention CC and wrestling making their mark.

Then I reminded myself that was the old way.

I am glad this article is about the culture and what is taking place around the things we can control and not about some one season wonder of an unexpected team making the playoffs or Final Four. ISU has built something very special and that includes much of the business world, not just sports. I wish we were still in Ames area to really soak it in but more than willing to spread the word where I can.

I believe Dodd has been very critical of SEC and Big 10 money grab. Unlike guys like the shill of the south Paul Finebaum

Amazing article and so many great quotes throughout. At the end of the day JP is by far the best thing to ever happen to ISU athletics and it's not close. So many schools with more resources than us would kill to be in our position. I know JP creates a lot of butthurt in certain corners of our fanbase, but he is the best AD in the country IMO. Who knows where we would be right now without his leadership.

Heard through second-hand info that early in the season Barnes wasn't even traveling. Not sure if this is true, but that would be crazy to go from a guy that is not even on the road game roster early in the year to starting and playing really well.
