Their arrogance and pride brought down every ounce of momentum that was left from their dominance. Firing a coach averaging over 9 wins per season for six years, especially in the roller coaster that is college football today, is complete incompetance.

The evolution of college football and the creation of the Big 12 required dominant teams to adapt, and Nebraska because of their pride was left behind. Maybe for good.

Absolutely right ....... they brought this on themselves and will continue to do so, until they realize that their past is past and they will never again dominate like they once did. They can rise again, but they will have ups and downs like all the other storied programs.

Ive always felt that the Big 12 has had a hand in laying the smack down on the Cornholes as well. Much tougher than the big 8 ever was.

It seems that in the whole concept of karma, what goes around comes around, etc... things are balancing out for husker nation and the storied NU football program. We as Cyclones from the former Big 8 will never forget how NU would obliterate other teams in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and the state's collective ego would swell from it as if the football team was Nebraska's answer to the nation. Nothing lasts forever, and all of the unchecked arrogance and expecations are finally coming back to bite them. Whenever I hear people say they feel sorry for Neb. or Callahan, I just want to puke. We Americans are quite forgiving and have short term memories (hello, OJ!) but I'll never forget those droves of arrogant Neb. fans flocking to JT while I was at ISU in the 90s. I love watching that program and state struggle. They had it too good for too long. I probably hate NU like most people on here hate EIU, but thats just my humble opinon.

There was a LOT of heat on Osborne for most of his tenure at NU, because up until he finally won his championships in the 90's he usually lost both his bowl game and the Oklahoma game every year. There wasn't internet or sports talk radio but it was common knowledge that there was unrest among the alums and fans. Yeah, he clobbered us and most of the Big 8 through most of the 80's and 90's, but his record in big games against championship quality teams wasn't great. I do think they have a great legacy and with the right guy they will be very powerful again. I guess I don't know, though, if that legacy means anything to 17 year old kids anymore.

By the way, the best college football game ever played in my mind was the NU-OU game in 1971. The buildup was phenomenal and the game didn't disappoint, except I wanted OU to win. I think one of the assistants on the NU staff was Jim Walden. He may have even been QB coach.

It's hard to ever say a progam "deserves" any sort of failure, and I don't think Husker country was aching to push Solich out after going 9-3. Pederson is responsible for the recent downfall at Nebraska. He could've gotten someone better than Callahan... anyone who wins a Super Bowl and then takes the program down the following year should have a giant "DO NOT HIRE" sign attached to their forehead.

Don't count Big Red out for next year...the money there is staggering. ALL of the asst. coaches will be paid and on staff through all of next year whether the new coach keeps them or not. So they will have recruiting continuity and a bunch of coaches to choose from, or a very large staff. I have never heard of this being done before, but with Nebraska money is no object, so Dr. Tom stepped up and made the offer to ALL of them (except Callahan of course) Whoever is hired comes into a pretty nice situation actually.

I think you are correct - I think I remember some recruits stating they had more high school coaches than there are college coaches.

ALL of the asst. coaches will be paid and on staff through all of next year whether the new coach keeps them or not. So they will have recruiting continuity and a bunch of coaches to choose from, or a very large staff.

They may be paying a bunch of coaches severance packages, but unless the new coach hires them to stay on they will have ZERO involvement with Husker FB. The NCAA has very strict restrictions on the number of assistant coaches a FB program can have and the role those coaches play.

From a recruit continuity standpoint, no matter who the new coach is they will lose some of their current recruits. IMO they could lose a lot of Callahan's recruits if they go a different direction on offense.

While hate for the EIU hawks has been encoded in my DNA, the unique way they have combined (They look suspiciously like a cardinal and gold cyclone) plus years of 70-plus beat downs have resulted in my very tissue hating everything "kNebraska".
