NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State

I think that simply erasing Paterno's (JoePa is a friendly nickname for the man, therefore I won't be using it anymore) wins is pointless. The wins happened. Pretending otherwise is just silly.

What I would support, is mandating that any official reference to Paterno's wins at Penn State include the following sentences:

"While Coach Paterno's accomplishments at Penn State were notable, he was willing to let a pedophile associated with his football program continue to rape children on campus because calling the police might have adversely affected recruiting. This shows that even a winning football coach and "molder of young men" can be a vicious SOB when his own glory is threatened."

It wouldn't have to be exactly those sentences, but something along those lines. Plaster that onto EVERY reference to Paterno (even carve it into his tombstone) in Happy Valley and I think that might do the trick.

He did nothing wrong? Most everyone would disagree

Did nothing illegal? That is to be determined. I am not up on Mandatory Reporter laws - but if an Elementary Teacher is a Mandatory reporter - I see now reason why employees of a public institution in higher education should be exempt from being mandatory reporters as well. No one is talking about this - but they should be.
Speaking of "reporters"...just curious. How many of the victims ever actually reported this to the police, even after they were grown up?

Sorry, I'm not following this case as closely as others. It just seems to me that if you keep silent, you are allowing others to be abused.

Vacating wins is common practice for a program that has been proven to be cheating for far lesser crimes than enabling a child sex offender. So is covering up a Child Sex Offfender and allowing him to continue to have access to the program cheating? It depends on the motive for the cover up - the Freeh report pretty clearly leads towards the idea that Penn State's reputation, history and legacy is more important than the crimes. What did they gain by doing this? Many, Many wins that otherwise would not have happened because the program would have been knocked down several notches as it is presumably will be now.

I really can't comment on that - never been abused - people of power and influence that weren't being abused could have stopped it and put the monster in jail. And yes there were reports of abuse before this broke - either the Attorney General didn't have enough evidence OR they didn't look hard enough...seems pretty clear they didn't look hard enough but that is easy to say now.

Neither have I. On the other hand, I have once had reason to check out everything in the Parks and Ames Library (admittedly not that much at the time) on victims of sexual abuse, and pore over those tomes closely.

I'm just saying that it's interesting given how much scapegoating is going on, why blame it all on Paterno--or the University as a whole?

Scapegoating? Pretty clear Paterno and his superiors knew this was happening, that makes it pretty clear to me they didn't take their responsiblities seriously and you can infer it was because football was more important than helping stop a monster. No I don't hold underage kids who were victims of the abuse with the same expectations of those who had no reason to hide it except for their own self serving interests.

This is going around. Probably not true, but interesting.

Not sure that I like the idea of players not counting against scholarship limits for their new teams. Rich getting richer with talent.

I agree but I think it might just be a way to protect the players who are innocent in all this. Before they signed with Pedo St. they may have been narrowed down to a few schools that wouldn't want them anymore due to scholarships situations.

I see that, too. There might not be a good answer to it, since most schools are probably largely full right now.

Then count the scholarships the following year for the schools that have PSU transfer on scholarship after this year, at least that way its just a one year unfair advantage for the programs that take these players.

That's not bad. It keeps schools from the extra stockpiling long-term.

Certainly don't want to see someone go 4 years without counting against a limit.

Seriously. I still want to know. The administrators (and Paterno) who were responsible are all gone. Not only that, but they are liable for at least civil suits, if not criminal negligence (or dead). So, why punish those who are innocent of any wrongdoing themselves?

The Attorney General at the time was running for Governor at the time and did not want to allienate the PSU extended family.
