NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State

I'm not sure how many of you read Steve Deace's take on this (I know not all like him)...but I appreciate his perspective on this:Penn State: A Lack of Institutional Conscience & Control | Steve DeaceHere are the penalties he would suggest:* A 14-year championship/postseason ban. Thats one year for every year Penn State concealed Sanduskys sexual abuse. Penn State will not be eligible to win a Big Ten or national championship, or play in a bowl game, until 2026.* A 14-year moratorium on collecting shares of television or bowl revenue, and all of that money is instead earmarked towards a restitution fund for the victims in an effort to lessen the burden on Pennsylvania taxpayers having to pick up the tab for the multitude of legal expenses forthcoming. Big Ten rules call for equal revenue sharing by all member institutions, so Penn State will still get a share of the bowl revenue collected by its conference rivals even if it werent eligible to play in a bowl game itself.* The NCAA alters the record books to no longer consider Paterno the winningest coach in college football history.I don't think it's fair to punish the fans or current players as they didn't have anything to do with aiding and abetting a child molester, but the school leadership did. Therefore there should be a heavy punishment that takes 14 years of cover-up into account....I don't think 5 years is enough (bowl ban or scholarships).
Alter and remove Paterno as winningest coach?Sorry, as sick as this is, shouldn't remove records. This had no bearing on his wins. Strip them of whatever going forward, but don't think you retroactively take anything away.

Agreed, if for no other reason than it's a completely empty gesture. It does absolutely nothing to vacate wins.

Well punishing the school's football program with so called worse than death penalty punishments is already punishing the fan base is it not?

Disagree - I think you can say the silence and coverup was to ensure the program was not adversely affected in terms of winning and more importantly the legacy of Paterno was not impacted...while you can't change the outcome of the "wins", you can affect the legacy of Paterno. Paterno should remembered as the coach that put his personal legacy and his program ahead of doing the right thing. So tired of hearing what a great guy he was - he knew he was dying - he had every opportunity to come clean but did not presumably because he wanted to protect his legacy or his family's money. Now both will be impacted by his silence

With two teams from the big 10 banned from post season play. I think the Qwaks have a good chance of playing in the rose bowl.

This is actually a pretty good point. 12 team conference but really only 4-5 eligible teams that have a snowball's chance at the top 3 bowl slots.

If Michigan's not great it's really up for grabs.

A conference that is known for consistently being below average is just getting worse due to things that would make the SEC blush. Oh, the Big 10:rolleyes:

They won't remove football records. I feel bad for there fans. Not the message board and crazy fans acting like the statue should not come down. I am talking about normal fans who grew up watching and loving penn state. Know there school is in the wrong and will have to deal with the nonsense. They had no power to do anything. Of course the kids this happened to as well. If I were penn state I would self impose a one season ban. Regroup and start recruiting for 2014.

you don't think that's already happened? Look at his wikipedia page. Child abuse is mentioned in the very first sentence.

I personally don't care if they vacate wins or not, but it is meaningless.

no I really don't- sure most college football fans that don't follow PSU probably think this today, but the faithful are probably still hoping this just goes away and the history and legacy of the program can be saved...When the media writes about Penn State- 10, 20, 30 years from now - it should always be about how Paterno lied and covered up to promote winning, not what a great man he was and how he positively impacted 100's of young men. Its the Dozen or more that matter.

People of legacy status like Paterno once was think they are untouchable. He protected his legacy and the progam with such thinking I believe, instead should have made the phone call to the police himself. His legacy would not have been tarnished like it is now.

Coaches in strong D-1 football programs are programed to win period whatever it takes. Hope that changes and instead future wise do the right thing when something of this magnitude happened, but failed to do so. Hell even Meyer at Ohio State said you are judged on how many conference championships and national titles you won at that school.

Loss of post-season eligibility for 5 or even 14 years would be hard on the program, but I'll be disappointed if they don't get the death penalty this year or next year. They need to have some time away from the sport to get their priorities straight.

I'm thinking they play their games this year (or next) but all on the road.

IT would be a nice jab taking Joe's record away from him.

How would it be a nice jab? He did nothing wrong or illegal. Terribly unethical? Yes... but did this affect his ability to recruit better players to PSU?

Throw the book at PSU, give them the death penalty for all I care... but worthless to vacate any records.

By helping cover up crimes, one could argue yes.

He did nothing wrong? Most everyone would disagree

Did nothing illegal? That is to be determined. I am not up on Mandatory Reporter laws - but if an Elementary Teacher is a Mandatory reporter - I see now reason why employees of a public institution in higher education should be exempt from being mandatory reporters as well. No one is talking about this - but they should be.

If Joe Paterno is a mandatory reporter, then yes, what he did was illegal. Even then, participating in the cover up of crimes is illegal. So yes, what JoePa did was illegal.
