Suddenly tonight we have a strong musty smell in our basement. Can't really pinpoint it. I can't find any leaks or wet spots. Any idea what could be causing it?

BTW - I work from home all day in the basement and didn't smell anything before tonight.

Do you have a relative humidity gauge? When our basement gets a little musty it's a sign that we need to fire up the dehumidifier...generally only in the spring and summer though.

That was my first thought but the carpet doesn't smell at all. It seems to be up higher. I guess I'll just start tearing out the basement ceiling until I find something.

my guess... dead mouse somewhere.

It's not exactly musty, but we had a drier vent come loose for awhile before we figured out what it was.

Look under bathroom & kitchen first and any place else where you have plumbing (laundry, outside hose bib, etc.).
