I rarely drive on 2 lane roads simply because I know there are cyclists on them. The numbers have drastically increased it seems since Lance started winning the tour.

jmb, I agree, the death of this man is a good time to help raise awareness. It's a good thing to have people be mindful of this. However your methods in this thread have been an abysmal failure because as Angie said, the rhetoric is completely over-the-top and we don't know anything yet other than the driver made a cowardly move by leaving the scene.

He'll probably get the most serious charge dropped in exchange for a guilty plea on the other two .

This is a terrible situation... One man is dead and I'd like to believe this old man did not mean to do this. His wife is in a nursing home and he just ruined the rest of his own life. Just bad for everyone involved. I'm a cyclist and a driver. Let's all try and work together here and be safe. We can share the road and not let this happen again.

NO... It's an awful situation for everyone. If nothing else, we could all take a look at our own driving and cycling habits and make sure we're not involved in a similar situation.
I would love to know what the driving aggressivley as cited by the county sheriff means:

Since the sheriff wasn't an eyewitness I'm gonna guess he was just relaying information shared by the actual witnesses.

One thing we all know is you will make it as bad as it ever could possibly be because of your biking agenda and how all auto drivers are evil...
Yup...that whole "killing people is bad thing" is 'crazy' talk. I have known about this for some time, and have said nothing. I just found the WCS's comment on driving aggressive...interesting. I wonder what exactly that means?

p.s. 91 did you know that within hours of this crime he was out at a bar drinking and playing pool....is that my biking agenda or just a cruel old man?

I have very mixed feelings about bicycle traffic. I have been on both sides of the situation recently and don't know what to think about how to make it all work well. (I know it does, in lots of places).
As a rider, and a novice, with my two year old along I can tell you that people in the burbs, even on relatively residential streets, have no idea how to react to a bicycle. If you try to ride as traffic on the street they generally act as if you shouldn't be there. Twice I was passed on a side where I was going to try to make a turn. Not very pleasant and I stick to the sidewalks around the area, legal or not.

Conversely, I have come across a couple of riders that definitely were confident and took up a whole traffic lane. Thats fine, if you want to be a car, follow the rules. The problem is that each one then ran a red light. I suppose since they each were slowing me down significantly I should be happy that they took a head start. I'm not sure I really care but it seems that you can't have the best of both worlds.

Late to the entire discussion, but oh well.
