When considering the national player of the year, head to head statistics should be taken into account whenever possible. From the raw statistics of the two ISU vs KU games this year here's how the two All-American candidates compare:
Points . . . . . . 23 . . . . 16 . . . . . 25 . . . 32
Rebounds . . . . . 7. . . . . 6 . . . . . . 2. . . . 6
Assists . . . . . .7. . . . . 1 . . . . . . 7. . . . 5
Steals . . . . . . 4. . . . . 1 . . . . . . 2. . . . 1
Turnovers . . . . .3. . . . . 3 . . . . . . 0. . . . 3
Blocks . . . . . . 1. . . . . 0 . . . . . . 0. . . . 0
(Ed: My apologies for the dots - I couldn't get the spacing right)
So statistically, for the overall numbers, Points - even, Rebounds - Mason +3, Assists Morris +8, Steals Morris +4, Turnovers Morris -3, Blocks Morris +1.
If we go with possessions Morris is +5, and Assists (+8) return at least 16 points in offense. Advantage Morris.
If we look at another metric - "Making the plays at crunch time" that would be the last 4 minutes of the game in Hilton, and the last 4 minutes and overtime in the Phog. In Hilton, the last 4 minutes Mason had two baskets (4 points), two rebounds, but a turnover and a missed free throw. Morris had a three and two free throws (5 points) and an assist against a foul and two missed shots (a 2 and a 3). Pretty much a wash. In the Phog - Last 4 minutes Mason had a layup and 2 of 3 free throws (4 points) and two rebounds to go with a turnover and two missed shots (a 2 and a 3). On the other hand Morris had a 3 a 2 and 3 of 4 free throws (8 points) a rebound and 2 assists against two missed 2's.
Basically and statistically Mason disappeared while Monte delivered.
Conclusion Monte Morris >> Frank Mason
