If you don't know, Moe Cason is a pretty big name in the national BBQ scene, and is a native of Des Moines. I'm pretty happy to hear he's wanting to open a place up. Also throws some shade at other local BBQ places in the article.

So is talking sh!t a thing amongst BBQ competitors, or is this guy just a d!ck who thinks you can't make good BBQ if you aren't black?

It's annoying how he talks **** on the other establishments. Smokey D's is legit. Cactus Bob's (not mentioned) is also legit. There is definitely good bbq in Des Moines, whether or not it lacks "soul".
when I worked at Smokey D's back in HS when the 2nd ave restaurant opened Moe would be in talking with Shad and Darren all the time, so to see him say this doesn't look great at all.

Smokey D's for the price point of commercial BBQ is great. You just don't win Jack Daniels and American Royal if you're bad at BBQ. Competition BBQ uses really expensive producers like Snake River for briskets, so if Moe is using that as a comparison he's nuts.

Q39, Jack Stack, etc are better but cost more.

Smoky Ds, Whatcha Smoking, Flying Mango, Kued, Cornbred (in Ames) are all good at appropriate price levels.
Have heard good things about Big Play's new place.

That, or does it need to be located in an old building in a low income neighborhood? I'm trying to figure out where the soul comes from.

Looking at the location, I don't know where people are expected to park.
