Have you ever watched BBQ Pitmasters? All they do is talk **** to each other.

Sure, but unless I am mistaken there is no "they" here in Des Moines.......it's just him talking ****. Maybe he is trying real hard to make the DSM area his own little reality program.

I live off of Fleur and used to get food at Gateway all the damn time. However, their sandwiches have really gone to **** the last few months. Through last summer I used to get the large and would often only eat half they were so big. Recently, I bet I get 1/2 the fillings that I used to. I'm sure the whole pandemic thing has forced them to cut costs but man, I'd rather see an increase in price than being shorted food. I'll go back again after things get back to normal to see if their portion sizes come back otherwise I'll just have to move on. The rest of the grocery side still has some great prices though!
I love just down the street from gateway and get their food pretty regularly and I’m not sure what you are talking about. I try a variety of things but haven’t noticed any significant drop in quantity of food, though.

I drove down Ingersoll the other day (it's been a while) and saw a gigantic rooftop bar being built there at the SW corner of MLK.
Looks huge.

Zora, a new rooftop bar is going there. Says it should be open this spring. Interested to see what it’s like.

Flying Mango is my favorite in DSM and I probably prefer it to Q39, Jack Stack, and Joe's. Pre pandemic, I checked out Hawq Jaw in KC, it was ok but nothing better than local BBQ. Whatcha Smokin in Luther is also decent. LC's in KC is good.

The one place I want to check out in KC is Slap's.

I have nothing against Jethros but I usually eat a tenderloin. They also have good spicy corn.

I’m the same, again though it’s all about preference. I put KC Joe’s, flying Mango, and Unrvld kind of on the same tier. I love the sides at Jack Stack but I can take or leave their meat. Q39, Smokey D’s, etc I really don’t care if I eat it again ever. If people want to go there I will but I’d never just choose to do it.

side note, I know a lot of people have mentioned coaches Kolaches and Unrvld but they are great, owned by former clones, and I’m not just saying it because they are former players. We got kolaches for our super bowl party from there. Love them.

Jimmy in Boone got his start when he was an ISU student working for Battle. He fell in love with the business and many of Jimmy's product are direct copies of Battles.

Jimmy has some of the best brisket I've ever had. However, it's in Boone and Boone sucks. That, and some kid barfed all over the place when I was eating in there once and I can never erase that memory from my mind every time I've been there.

What do you typically order? We are mix between their salads and sandwiches. The salads can still feed an army and are damn near impossible to eat in one sitting. One of my favorites there is the Cubano, and while the sandwich size has remained the same, my last two orders have been about half of the meat. I used to struggle to eat the full size order but my last two I've had to take the bread apart to spread the filling around so I didn't just get bites of bread. Maybe it's just that sandwich?

I love Coaches Kolaches. I wish they were a little more conveniently located, but that could also be very bad for me. We're planning on picking up some Unrvld to go this weekend for our weekly takeout adventure. Can't wait to try it!

Yeah I prefer to not think about how many calories I'm eating when I power through like 4 or 5 of them.

I get the reuban quite a bit and haven't noticed a drop off really, but I do get different sandwiches. I also get the bahn mi, falafel, nashville hot chicken and the steak burrito.

Speaking of Jimmy's, I need to see if the Hy-Vee has some sauce, or worst case scenario, I probably need to go Jimmy's and just order the Texas toast and sauce. To be honest I've never had his brisket before. His pork sandwich and sauce is what I have I have always gotten.

I will say that I had brisket at Smokey D's once and it was pretty bad. It was dried out and looked like it may have been under a heat lamp too long. Ribs and wings are my go to there. Just wish they would sell the sauce the glaze the wings with.

One sauce and rub brand that has become one of my favorites is Deadeye: https://deadeyebbq.com Has an Iowa State connection too. I think someone else mentioned it here earlier too but Big Daddy's is another local product that is pretty good although I am not a fan of the Applicous flavor as it is VERY heavy on sour apple flavor IMO. Another one that surprisingly is good is Guy Fieri's Kansas City and Carolina sauces. For a mass produced sauce they are probably of the 2 of the better sauces I have found, the KC is very versatile and if you like vinegar based sauces the Carolina goes really well on pulled pork.

Dead Eye is pretty much all we buy anymore. It's nice it's easy to find in Fareway or HyVee.

I remember hearing a Dead Eye advertisement on a podcast about how they could be found in every Fareway.

Apparently they must think there aren't Fareways north of Highway 3 or something, because I've never seen it in the Cresco or Decorah Fareways (only ones I frequent).

Hmmm. Their reuban is my 2nd favorite so maybe I'll have to try ordering that one again.
