this one seems less shocking. I was always pretty sure that Taco Bell employed a Noah's Ark philosophy (two of every animal) when it came to their meat.

I like the variety of flavors. Unfortunately for me, I have to follow the 30 minute rule after eating taco bell. (Must be within a stone's throw of a bathroom 30 minutes after eating).

How responsible are places like Taco Bell for their meat? I don't know anything about their infrastructure, but I'm assuming they don't own farms and meat packing plants all to their own. Aren't they buying from a supplier? And therefore, doesn't the real blame fall on them? I don't eat at taco bell, so I don't really care, but I'm not a big fan of the media jumping out and saying "HORSE MEAT FOUND IN BRAND X" I mean in reality, yeah, we are hoping and assuming that horse meat isn't in things labeled "Beef", but in the end, I'm glad they found it and are making a change. If Taco Bell is leaving it in the meat, or doing it on purpose to reduce costs, then yeah, attack them. But, most of these are issues they don't have any real control over other than to stop doing business with a certain supplier who is supposed to be providing 100% beef to them.

I guess my rant just leads me to what I could have just asked at the beginning. Not being able to read the article, how responsible is Taco Bell or is it more the suppliers fault?

Clonefan, I think you have a good point, and perhaps part of the reason it is popping up everywhere is because of suppliers. It's still funny to me, though, and actually doesn't really deter me from eating there. I think Janny has posted this pic in the past, but appropriate:

Yeah, lol, love that pic. It's just a topic that actually does interest me. I'm assuming USDA inspectors are somewhat involved in grading the meat and allowing the suppliers to call it "Beef" so, how responsible is Taco Bell in the end? I know the USDA can't probably be there through the entire process either, so what concerns me, is the suppliers. Taco Bell really can't afford to test every bag of meat they get in, they have to have some assumption that what they are getting as beef is in fact beef. No different than any other restaurant in the country really. You can't afford to control it from calf to hamburger, so who's responsibility does it end up being.

As far as taste, well, horse is meat right? Wouldn't probably bother me to know I ate horse. There is actually a great, "This American Life" podcast on this subject. #484 Dopplegangers. They do a story on pig bung and weather or not it is being sold as "imitation Calamari" Not for the faint of heart, but really amazing that they did a taste test and people either couldn't tell the difference or actually like the pig bung better.

Krusty: Listen, about the Ribwich. We won't be making them anymore. The animal we made them from is now extinct.
Homer: The pig?
Otto: The cow?
Krusty: You're way off. Think smaller...think more legs.

Am I wrong in assuming that the horses who are coming to dinner are the old ones that also wind up in the glue factory?

One million ex-Romanian horses that use to ply their highways. The law disllowed horses on the roads and this was the result for Bessie.
