Anybody have a good place to do a mix and match 6 pack in the des Moines area? I'm back in Iowa for the week, and wanna get an Iowa sample for my brother in law.

2nd Hy-Vee. I have to give it to them for being one of the best liquor/beer distributors in the region. I've tried looking for specialty stuff for friends/family, and Hy-Vee always has the best selection.

Cyclone Liquor may be a tad better, but I haven't been there in 8-10 years.

Related question: What's the best Iowa beers you can get at hy-vee?

It varies by location. One HyVee can have a different selection than another, especially in different parts of the state.

If they carry it, you can't go wrong with beer from Backpocket (Davenport) or Toppling Goliath (Decorah). Confluence is in Des Moines, so they might carry that.

From there it all depends on what you like. There's a specific beer that I like which is crisp and easy to drink, the Honey Pilsner from Madhouse Brewing in Newton. Dunno if HyVee would include that in their mix-and-match.

I usually prefer Hy-Vee (Ankeny or Fluer) over Beer Crazy but if you just want to buy singles, Beer Crazy has a better selection. On the other hand, if you're just buying Iowa beer, Hy-Vee should have most of what you want it in singles.

I would try to find out what type of styles your brother in law likes.

Backpocket is in Coralville. Great River Brewery is from Davenport & makes some great stuff (& can be found at pretty much any Hyvee).

It's looking like we might make a few stops around the area today. Might check out the hyvee up in accident first. Then make a loop sound to urbandale.

Only been out of the state for four years now, and the beer scene is growing nicely.

I'll second the suggestion for Beer Crazy. It looks unpromising and small, but that place is loaded with beers and they carry a lot that Hy-Vee doesn't. Hy-Vee's worth checking out, too, though.

Second the Hy-Vee at Douglas and 86th and a shout out for the new Hy-Vee in Waukee. Jordan Creek Hy-Vee is probably the worst for singles on the west side of DSM. Beer Crazy on 100th north of Douglas just behind Taco Johns is a great place for beers from most of the major craft breweries.

Even though it's far away from me, I'll make the trip every couple of weeks to the Fluer Hy-Vee. I met the liquor manager at El-Bait Shop and he's a true craft beer fan. I've been to nearly every Hy-Vee in DM and he gets some stuff that is very exclusive. Ankeny Prairie Trail is 2nd on my list and I've heard the Pleasent Hill manager also knows his stuff. Urbandale is the closest to me but they kind of **** me off at times. 6 months ago they didn't even carry Founders.

I believe Toppling Goliath only delivers to:

Prairie Trail
Fluer
35th st. WDM
Mills Civic WDM
Winestyles
