You are wayyyyyy too optimistic about the Big 12 in your analysis. It is not possible for every team to be as great as you said plus tossing in traditional powers Texas and Oklahoma and always good Texas Tech. You talked about not blowing anyone away, has everyone forgotten last year already? We went through a stretch last year where we were throttling teams like A & M (@ A & M) and Ok St and talking about a January bowl. Everyone is down on ISU, and I admit I had higher hopes for this season-statistically, but the only stat that really matters is W’s. We have 3, exactly where everyone thought we would be. The rest of the Big 12 will not be as good as you think down the road, there are always teams on the bottom like Baylor. ISU is well positioned to be a consistently good team for years to come.

I have watched and supported this team both vocally and fiscally for a decade now. The teams early in Mac’s tenure would have closed up shop, laid down and taken the loss in games like the Toledo and UNLV this year. A Mac team from the mid to late 90’s would have gotten rolled 64-3 at defending national champion Texas, we were competitive and simply lost to a better team in both our losses this year. Hell, Mac had a winning record vs. Iowa prior to the game this year and now is .500 against them. How many past ISU coaches can claim that? Even national powers have down games throughout the year like UNI-look at Miami currently. I am embarrassed that the UNI game was that close, but every team has down weeks.

We were dealt a tough hand this year, we lost most of our defense and play the second toughest schedule in the country-of course our statistics don’t look good. We are 3-2 right now and are on track for a bowl game and the 7 to 8 wins most of us saw at the beginning of this year. With our schedule and starters lost, almost any postseason would be a victory. If we get into a bowl game, this could be Mac’s best coaching job yet.

If we toss Mac, who do we get in his place? By tossing Mac you guarantee two to three years of rebuilding. The way my fellow ISU fans are acting, the new coach would be run out of town after eight games. Christ, a year ago we were talking January bowl game-the almighty Deace predicted BCS bowl game. Now, after the same start we ALL predicted, we are down on him. I am no Mac fan and my buddies and I have called for his head several times. However, I am a realist-he is a solid coach who has our program on solid ground. Everyone knew this season would be hard with the schedule and loss of starters, we are still on the same path to W’s and L’s we all predicted at the outset of this season. I am willing to let the cards fall where they may with Mac.

Why are people upset that fans are talking about how they feel on a forum built for discussion? Isn't this the place to talk about how they feel about the team, players, coaches and administration? I've read about 20 posts talking about this isn't the time or the place for this, or this is a distraction to the team. I feel the exact opposite. This is the place and the time for this. After underperforming in the first 5 games, fans have every right to express their feelings. If the team and coaches can't handle the speculation or the criticism they shouldn't be involved with college football. The Cyclone Nation is tame compared to other programs. Shouldn't this talk light a fire underneath this team and coaches instead of being a distraction. Who knows what should happen with D-Mac and I think everyone agrees that it should wait till the end of the year. All I know is that I've been upset with D-Mac the last few years but kept telling myself he's worth it because we were much worse before. I don't know what the right answer is, but I think the discussion is needed. I want someone to convince me why he should stay.

because some people around here think the arguments some people put up are foolish. and you know the old saying, "when you argue with a fool, it's hard for people to tell the difference...":wink0st:

You guys make excellent points on the resources and money to turn this program around. So many people think only in direct relationships and ask dumb questions like how would $200,000 more this year get us a bigger win over UNI or something like that. But look at the pathetic salaries that Mac is left to spread around to his assistants. Say you do get a new coach, he becomes frustrated with not being able to bring any of his connections here and keep them here with the salaries. Then say we get to this next level of 8 or 9 wins for a couple seasons. Then we get the crowd that wonders why we can't make the national championship. Show me teams with the resources we have at our university that have found a coach keeping them at this next level. And don't even give me an Iowa Ferentz story because they have always had more resources. I do not accept mediocrity, but I also realize what we have for the money and realize where Dan is making strides where others may be blind to it as they focus only on the mistakes.

TALE OF TWO CITIES
Garn91 would vouch the same thing happens in Lincoln where it is never enough. Nine wins a year from couple decades was never enough. Some of their people expect a national championship every year. The only record left after Solich is the 256 or so consecutive sellouts. Now their scoreboard is not as big as the one in Texas.

Since this thread keeps growing legs anmd remains contentious, time for an interim humor lift before the big game:

A priest and a rabbi were sitting next to each other on an airplane.
After a while, the priest turned to the rabbi and asked:

"Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork? "

The rabbi responded, "Yes, that is still one of our beliefs."

The priest then asked, "Have you ever eaten pork?"

To which the rabbi replied, "Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to
temptation and tasted a ham sandwich." The priest nodded in
understanding and went on with his reading.

A while later, the rabbi spoke up and asked the priest, "Father, is
it still a requirement of your church that you remain celibate?"

The priest replied, "Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith."
The rabbi then asked him, "Father, have you ever fallen to the
temptations of the flesh?"
The priest replied, "Yes, rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke
with my faith." The rabbi nodded understandingly and remained silent,
thinking, for about five minutes.

Finally, the rabbi said, "Beats a ham sandwich, doesn't it?

It is all about money....Jamie Pollard knows that and that's what's prompted the $135 million upgrade request. Our facility while better still need to improve. More money buys you better assistant coaches, equipment, advertising etc. etc. You get all those things and you’ll be able to recruit the depth of players that you all want to win games.

Max Urich who was our A.D. in the 80's basically said the same thing Jamie Pollard is saying and got ran out of town. He went down to K-State and they spent money and they went from the Big 12 closet to near the top for a long time. Their basketball success has been more mixed, but they have the facilities now to attract top talent and most importantly their financial bottom line is quite solid.

It's really a testimate to Dan McCarney's character to see the quality recruits he has gotten. The Davis Brothers(Okay Troy was a carryover, but he held onto him), Enis Haywood, Seneca Wallace, Sage Rosenfeldt. A ton of good lineman. He did that with a beggars budget and sub par facilities most of the time. It makes me wonder what he could do with the right tools.

Bryceman - Your comment about things being like they are in Lincoln is dead on. I have been disturbed about all the anti D Mac talk lately, and couldn't quite place where I'd heard it before. Then I read your post. 1991 or 92. Dateline Lincoln Nebraska. They just finish up another 9-3 season or so, and people are going crazy for the coach's job. I wrote a letter to the editor back then to the Omaha World Herald. It incensed me. THey got to see future NFL talent, in one of the all time best stadiums sandwhiched between some of the best pre and post game tailgating, go all over the nation to "good" bowl games and they could appreciate it. We would have killed to go 6-5 back then. "Learn to appreciate it. From the view from the east, that doesn't look so bad." Oh my God, have we become Nebraska fans?

umm...chuckd4735? you still think we'll win the north? I agree we could beat KSU, KU, and CU, but not Mizzou... they have a winning record...

Our coaching staff is PATHETIC!
