I would be shocked if we hired Mangino. Impressive resume but treats his players like crap. I don't think his motivational style of dropping F-bombs, calling them worthless #@&%ers, and making them do bear crawls until their hands bleed, will fit in with CPR.

Do people not remember why KU fired him ??? Things have to get pretty bad before you hire a coach with a record as good as his.

Ex-Kansas Jayhawks players: Coach Mark Mangino said 'hurtful' things - ESPN

Mark Mangino out as coach at Kansas - ESPN

I think this would have to be acknowledged/addressed, but I trust CPR would have none of that and that'd be laid out, pretty clearly.

Also, I think people can change/grow. Look at Larry Eustachy....take of he clone tinted glasses and in his prime here, he was a jerk and had issues....he's mellowed a lot and acknowledges it now.

"These incidents happened day after day for years."

Can't see CPR going that route.

Again- where are the stories of Mangino abusing players at Kansas State, Oklahoma, or Youngstown State? We're not asking him to coach the team. Just the offense. I want to put points on the board, damn it.

CPR could bring Mangino in, keep him on his best behavior for a couple years, and when he moves on, hire Coach K or whoever from within the program.

From Wiki:

[h=2]Controversy[edit][/h][h=3]Lincoln High controversy[edit][/h]After going 1-9 in his first season as the head coach of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, a group of parents went to the school board and demanded his firing because of his "language, and harsh approach to people". The board elected not to fire Mangino, but he left the school after only one year and did not complete the year as a teacher.[SUP][17][/SUP]
[h=3]High school referee incident[edit][/h]On September 21, 2002, Mangino yelled at the officiating crew assigned to the Lawrence High SchoolOlathe East football game in which Mangino's son, Tommy, was playing. Mangino apparently became angry after referees failed to call what he believed was a late hit on Tommy, the Lawrence High quarterback.
Lawrence High School officials took undisclosed action against Mangino after the game for violating a Kansas High School rule barring abuse of game officials by coaches, players and fans.[SUP][18][/SUP]
[h=3]2004 Kansas–Texas game[edit][/h]In 2004, Mangino paid a $5,000 fine for suggesting that officials acted with favoritism in a questionable offensive pass interference call that affected the outcome of a game againstTexas. Mangino implied that money and a BCS berth for the Big 12 Conference influenced the officials to make a call in favor of Texas.[SUP][19][/SUP] He and athletic director Lew Perkins issued public apologies the day after the incident.
[h=3]NCAA penalties and probation[edit][/h]In 2005, the university self-reported to the NCAA that five major rules violations—including academic fraud—had been committed by some of the football team's student-athletes. In 2006, these major violations, along with four others that has allegedly occurred in other KU sports programs, contributed to the NCAA charging the athletics department displaying a "lack of institutional control". A graduate assistant was found to have supplied answers for some of the correspondence courses taken by some prospective recruits from junior colleges. As a result, the football program's ability to recruit players transferring in from junior college was reduced for two years; and, the program lost two scholarships for each of the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
[h=3]Raimond Pendleton incident[edit][/h]During the first game of the 2007 season in which the University of Kansas beat Central Michigan University, KU's Raimond Pendleton ran a CMU punt back 77 yards for a touchdown; but, as he approached the endzone, he slowed down in order to jump into it in a dramatic fashion. The officials threw a penalty flag for "excessive celebration", and gave the Jayhawks a 15-yard, "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalty that forced KU to kick off 15 yards closer to their own endzone. When Pendleton returned to the sideline, an irate Mangino took Pendleton aside and gave him an expletive-laden tongue-lashing. The incident was caught on video, and transmitted by local TV stations in the Topeka and Kansas City areas, eventually finding a wider audience after a copy of it was uploaded to YouTube. Pendleton afterward downplayed the incident, saying that he deserved it.
[h=3]Internal investigations[edit][/h]A separate investigation was conducted in 2007, related to Mangino's repeated parking tickets on campus and alleged verbal abuse and negative behavior toward campus staff issuing those tickets.[SUP][20][/SUP] In November 2009, the recurring issue of Mangino's chronic, alleged misconduct towards his players became the subject of an internal investigation by the University of Kansas Athletic Department. He was formally accused of boorish and violent actions.[SUP][21][/SUP] National sports media coverage of this increased already-mounting public pressure on the university to terminate Mangino's employment. After a prolonged period of negotiations, the university and Mangino's attorneys agreed on the buy-out amount that was large enough to secure his quiet resignation in December 2009.

Lol if you dont think 99% of college coaches use harsh language and carry some sort of baggage. Saban, pinkel, petrino, ferentz, pelini, rhoads all have baggage

Mangino 2013 isn't Mangino 2008 either.

Mangino was removed as HC at Kansas. Can't just sweep that under the rug. The risk is not worth the reward. Too many other OC candidates to consider. Hiring Mangino could end up being a disaster. Don't see CPR even considering Mangino.

Agree. Interestingly, a lot of these issues arose when Jayhawks stopped winning. Winning cures everything or change perceptions.

If CPR wants to bring him, I'll be fine. As long as he can deliver, there shouldn't be any problems. As long as this guy is not a woman beater, s.x offender or drugs abuser, I think our fans will take him.

Very true. A lot of folks see the press conferences and hear radio shows and that's all they got...maybe a feel good story here and there about a coach....but I promise you, CPR has said things to players you wouldn't dare repeat in church...or in public for that matter.

I think there is a difference between "chewing butt" and being an abusive jerk.

Mangino is a risk, but he has paid his dues and continues to Coach Football. The guy took a team to the Orange Bowl from KU of all places. He can Coach. What Mark could gain from being around CPR would be great for him. Teaching, positive attitude, and caring about the players. Mark brings a good Offensive mind to the table, and the ability to win in the Bg 12.

Can we get someone with a better attitude? Sure, can we get someone who has succeeded at his level? Probably not.

CPR knows Mark. Probably has an opinion on him, and if it is a no then I trust Paul's judgement this is his program. But if Mark has changed and gotten his ego issues under control than I think you could do much worse.

Wow, he got fined for alleging that officials showed favoritism to Texas due to money and potential BCS births. What kind of raving lunatic would do such a thing? We certainly have no need for that here. :jimlad:

Exactly. I would trust CPR, and could see him being a great influence on Mangino. But hands down, there is not a more qualified candidate (if he is even a candidate). Mangino already achieved at KU things that we can only dream about for ISU. And he had tremendous success at KState and OU.

Clearly, the pressures of winning as the top dog got the best of him, and I would agree with anyone that would say he is not a fit for HC. But we are talking OC.

You could probably do worse and you could probably do better. I don't want an OC who would end up getting more attention than our Head Coach or our team. In Mangino's case that would be a likely scenario. His presence could prove to be a major distraction. Kind of like getting a player who is a complete headcase but is extremely talented. You might best just avoid them completely. I see Mangino as that type of coach. There is a reason why Mangino hasn't been plucked from Youngstown State. He was relieved of his HC job back in 2009. Looking at it from CPR's perspective I just don't see him picking Mangino as the OC.

Every place he's been an assistant or OC, he hasn't been. Does Rhoads get more attention than our team? Just this year Rhoads' post-Texas press conference tirade when national. And people know about the "So Proud" speech though they may not remember anything else about that game.

Rhoads is the Head Coach. Big difference. IMO, Mangino could be a BIG distraction. And the way things ended in Kansas was just bad, bad, bad. 7 losses in a row after a 5-0 record. Helluva meltdown there.

He's also been a head coach that took a terrible Kansas program to 12-1 and won a BCS game. Previous head coaches with that kind of success don't just blend into the background when they take a coordinator job..in the same conference, no less. Honestly, I can't really even think of a case where this has happened.

COULD be, but he also could have a talk with CPR (even JP) and it's understood he shows up to work and keeps his mouth shut, etc.

In general, I feel our assistants are pretty sheltered from media, etc unless they make themselves available. Heck, I forget sometimes Doc Sadler is an assistant.
