There are two good paths to take for a school like Iowa State:

*Young, unproven guy that's hungry and gunning to be a big-time HC some day (Tom Herman)
*Old, proven guy that's experienced and looking for his last stop in his career (Wally Burnham)

Messingham was neither

Good thing Hayden had good old Bill Brashier as his Defensive Coordinator for 17 years at Iowa and 11 years at North Texas State.

Doesnt mean he didnt aspire to be a head coach. Snyder applied for every job out there including ISU on numerous occasions before taking ksu after 17 others turned it down.

We are talking a 28 year span. And defenses that were absolutely great. C'mon. He was a childhood friend of Hayden Fry's content with being his Defensive Coordinator. And is it just a coincidence that he retired in 1995 and things kind of went south a couple years later?

Snyder was OC at Iowa. And the KSU program was already headed down under him. Snyder had losing seasons his last two years, and finished dead last in the Big 12 North his final year. He was burned out and all his top assistants had been poached away in the recent years before he "retired".
