Saw on channel 5 while eating at Legends ironically that a 19 year old man had fallen and died in a 7 floor elevator shaft last night at 12:30 am. They didn't say the building and I thought Legacy has 7 floors, sure enough when walking out of Legends there was a wooden cover on one of the doors. Then walking out KCCI was outside getting video.

Haven't found a link yet, anyone have any information on what happened?

I hate to assume this, but I always think there is alcohol involved in these situations.

I just don't know how this sort of thing could happen. First off, how do you get the doors open? Second, if you saw a set of doors open, wouldn't you avoid it and better yet call someone.

Man, that's horrible.

Halfway doesn't surprise me though. I lived there for a year, and by far it was the worst apartment I lived in while at ISU. Constant partying, people peeing in the elevators, and shoddy construction. Plus they kind of cheated around fire codes in the 5 bedroom apartments.

Okay, just to clarify for those of you who feel like innocent people should die due to stupidity... appearently they guys were horsing around in the hallway, pushing and shoving eachother without any intention of physical harm- just having fun. Boys being boys. As his friend pushed him into the elevator doors, his back was against the CLOSED DOORS of the elevator while the body weight caused the doors to open where he fell backwards down the shaft. The only way something like this could happen is from poor construction and/or a faulty elevator; just as someone stated in an earlier post. It's a college and I'm sure the elevators aren't in tip top shape. Think about it. Why would someone just walk right into a open elevator shaft where the elevator car isn't even present? Simple answer: they don't. And even if the doors were left open leading to a 7-story drop, the elevator should be blocked off. The death would then solely fall in the hands of the school making it completely responsible for his death due to how dangerous the building is. Elevator doors should NEVER be left open without a car present to walk right into. If a blind man was walking down that hall, he would fall to his death too. It's common sense people. The elevator was not in proper working condition and a poor guy fell to his accidental death where his friends had to witness the whole thing. If the select few of you are going to have the ignorance to say that people are stupid and therefore die due to their stupidity, then you might as well call the contactor, construction workers who built the elevator and school board stupid for allowing an elevator in improper working condition to be used without an out of order sign on it. Or MAYBE the school was unaware of the elevator's poor conditon, just like him. Elevator doors don't just open like that unless it is not working properly. I just found this all out tonight by a close friend of the guys and the man who died. There were enough witnesses to drop all charges of manslaughter against the guy's best friend who pushed him while playing around and had to witness him fall to his death. It was a freak accident. And these things do happen in real life.

I realize that you do not go to Iowa State, but I want to point out that the institution is in no fault whatsoever. Legacy Towers is a private apartment complex, in no way under ownership or management of ISU.

It's an emotional subject and really a tragic story, but I don't think it's right to jump on someone for reasonably trying to assess the situation. Clonehomer didn't say anyone was stupid, he was just bringing up questions. The story as it has been described doesn't really fit Occam's razor--I wouldn't have thought the doors could have opened by someone being pushed into them.

My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Very sorry to those who knew this person. This is an absolutly tragic for all involved.

Thanks to those that posted above, when one cant get details from the media the minds begins to think of all scenarios.
I've worried about those highrises ever since they were built seemed like they were built very fast.

Sorry for your loss. Not a big point at a time like his, but I can guarantee no one is more less at fault than ISU.

I also live in this building, (on the seventh floor). I am currently finishing my study abroad semester so I am not living there currently and haven't been back since Feb. There are two elevators in the building. During the fall semester this year one elevator was down/being repaired nearly 75% of the time. The building is a constant attraction for parties and drunk students treat it as such. I agree with comments made above about it being (somewhat) under-maintained.

Campustown is most certainly at fault, however, as mentioned above, I would like to confirm that Iowa State University is in no way related to the management or repair of the building.

With that said, it is a terrible tragedy for all involved. My thoughts and prayers go out to those families.

A 19-year-old has died after falling down 7-floors down an elevator shaft in Ames.

Police say the teen was from out-of-state and visiting friends at the Legacy Apartments. Police say they were called to the scene just after noon Saturday. The teen's name is being withheld while family is notified.

This is terrible.

And just to reiterate, no, these were not school owned or operated apartments. They're a block away from campus, but they're owned by another company. From what I've heard of these apartments, the management is not exactly the most student friendly, and do not do a good job taking care of their buildings.

All my thoughts and prayers to his friends and family. I just can't even begin to imagine.

Really? Just guys horsing around that the doors just open up? I understand that the cops are having a hard time getting all the details from these "witnesses." Maybe there's more to this story...
