Curious if anyone saw War of the Rohirrim?

Seems like the only negative reviews are angry it's a right retaining movie or the kind of guys who rage whenever a main character is a woman. Actual fantasy/lotr/anime fans seem to like it.

Regardless of how it's received it's kind of a new bar for anime in theaters in terms of distribution. Definitely for a non-Ghibli movie.

Of course old school Tolkien fans would feel very comfortable with anything from Middle Earth as animated films. The three classic animated films actually hold up imho with various charms. The Hobbit is easily better than live action for me.
I saw it on Friday night, was pretty sparse attendance for an opening weekend so I'm not surprised that it only raked in $4.6mil.

I think your take is spot on. As a LOTR fan who went back and re-read the Appendix section this is based on to prepare, I liked it. Stuck to the source material, as vague as it was, expanded the story within those bounds. Gave me an opportunity to see the first new LOTR film in 10 years.

Was it an obvious attempt to prolong the movie rights? Yes. Did I enjoy it anyway? Also, yes.

If New Line Cinema wants to keep churning these out every couple years until LOTR enters public domain, I'm all for it.

One other thing I think is important to note is that it's a hand-drawn 2D japanese anime style. So don't go expecting modern Disney-level 3D animation. It's a different style which can be halting at times, but also has some pretty spectacular sequences if you're a fan of that medium.

The only negative reviews I've read so far are this criticism which I expect of non anime fans, "girl hero bad" people, and people who feel a need to rage that they had to release a movie or lose their rights. Every person who seems like an LOTR fan (of the books) or anime fan has seemed to like or love it. It'll be interesting to see how it does streaming.

In the 90s I was a fan of Lodoss War anime which is basically a non-licensed LOTR anime, so it's wild for me to see this so main stream now.

This looks like something that would be right up my alley, but I'm guessing my wife would prefer that I watch it by myself.
