Sama will be fine at RB. He and Hansen are actually pretty similar backs, or at least they need to be. And early in the year they were struggling with the same thing, trying to pop too many outside, stringing them out and missing opportunities to get upfield. Hansen has greatly improved. He’s been more decisive and needs to be that one cut and go guy.

Sama runs tough and is physical, but he’s just not decisive right now. If our OL continues to play well Abu will get there.

OL has been really good. They pass protected well last year too, and the run game blocking is getting pretty good. The best thing I’ve seen from Clanton is our OL has really improved against stunts. A couple years ago the OL was horrible against stunts and delayed blitzes.
How about also having far fewer penalties from the OL? 1 penalty for just -0 yards vs WVA is something I do no recall seeing from an ISU team, ever!

We have zero fumbles lost on the year. We have punted 2 times total in the last 2 games. We're +9 in turnover margin.

Those are things that are beyond lucky bounces - they're the outcome you'd expect from a well oiled machine. As @1238576073jb said that all starts up front. Both in the pass protection and ability to create push in the run game.
3 years ago db's had hands of stone, now they catch everything. New coaches have helped.

Overall the team looks like it's playing with a purpose no matter the position group and there seems to be a real strong sense of unity/cohesion.

Can Abu switch positions and become the next Noel?
The smaller, slot-type receiver to replace Noel next year, will be a combination of Eli Green, Carson Brown, and maybe Eskildsen? Anybody else? Any true speed guys, like Noel? Noel has just been so good this year and last. He will be hard to replace but we've got some guys.

We will also really miss Jayden Higgins! He catches everything and has a knack for getting open and/or positioning himself well against a defender. There again, we've got some guys waiting in the wings. But Higgins is special and will be fun to watch on Sundays!

Both Higgins and Noel are great mentors for our 2nd and 3rd unit receivers and the young ones coming up.

Kudos to the OL as well!

I think the bolded part is true.

That said, Sama still obviously has a ton of talent and I imagine he'll keep his head up and realize he's a big part of this team and we'll need him going forward. All 3 backs provide something different and all 3 are good. It's quite a blessing.

But, the real reason I opened this thread was to also give plaudits to the offensive line. They've improved and it is fun to watch!
i predict a long touchdown run for sama against ucf

Yes and no, there have been a few dropped picks including one last week, I think the difference is that they seem to be getting far more opportunities this year compare to some leaner years.

My take- Abu is getting fewer snaps because he tries to turn every run into a 60 yarder. And to do so he cuts horizontally and ends up with runs for no gain.

Would be curious on what someone like Woody or Bruns take on Abu not being the dominant back. Is it gap vision, not following blocks, not patient or other guys are his equals/betters?

Jackson has great vision to make horizontal cuts. And Hanson has prototypical slasher vision. He see's a hole and with his size and strength will get minimum of 3 yards. IMO Hanson's style is very appealing to Campbell & Mauser's style of ball-control offense.
a pretty common thing for young RB's to do is to auto bounce to the outside immediately if the line looks congested. A bad habit picked up by young RB's that are physically superior to everyone else in HS. That tactic works in HS because they can simply outrun everyone. Does not work at this level and beyond (for most). He'll be fine as long as his vision and patience develope.

I kinda expect they’ll partly cover by using an extra tight end in the slot, the way they did with Kolar and Allen. That will be the extremely veteran group helping compensate for whatever WR inexperience we may (or may not) wind up with.

Also would expect that they’re saving a schollly for a Portal player.

I hope you are joking. he is a true sophomore. He'll be fine. It wasn't that long ago that he ran for over 275 in a game.
Greatly aided by the 6 inches of snow. Has he had more than one long run in any other game the last two years? Really bad in the bowl game. He was late to the RB thing in high school I believe and was recruited as a defensive back by most schools. The good news is that means he doesn't just have bad vision; he is still inexperienced with room to grow. I do hope he lives up to his potential, but he is not there. He is the 3rd choice at back right now and I hope we have a few blow outs so he can get the ball a lot more. The emergence of Jackson and Hansen is one of the biggest reasons for the 6-0 start. The RB position had me worried at the beginning of the year.

I'd like to see Sama as a kick returner since he is not getting RB reps. This would give him open field opportunities like the bears did with Gale Sayers. Noel is fair catching too much lately. Noel all 3 conference games: 1 KR 22 yd 2 PR 2 yd. Announcers keep saying Noel is an excellent returner - one of the nation's best ??

He'll be fine. He is a true sophomore. There seems to be some recency bias here. Sama outperformed CH agains ND, Iowa, Houston. I expect the staff will use all three all season continuing to do what they have done thus far; go with the hot hand. That was Hansen last game, but has not been all season.

To answer you bolded question, sama had a 77 yarder against Houston bringing his career total of 60+ yard TD runs to 4. The other 2 RB's have a combined 0. CH has a career long of 33 yards as far as I could tell.

Sama is the home run threat at RB.

I like that idea.

Noel has been dinged up in the last two games, let's keep him healthy and where he is most valuable to the team, WR.

Keep the dynamic talent of Sama on the field, making plays for the team.

And that is the problem, he is only a home run threat. He missed so many 2 to 3 yard gains in the Iowa game that it very well could have cost us the game. Not giving up on him by any means, but he needs to study film and become more consistent.

He had a couple of big runs at BYU last year too.

Personally, I think the OL play is the #1 reason we are 6-0

We are winning the TO battle, we are committing very few penalties & we are leading TOP - this is win-in-the-margin stuff & I think this all starts up front

After last night, I'm a true believer - we are playing really good, SOUND football, we aren't shooting ourselves in the foot & we have homerun hitters on O & absolute DAWGS on D
Easily Campbell's best Oline and probably the best since KO was at ISU, or one of Steve Loney's.

Oline and LB play are beyond exceptional considering expectations.

Abu is like that young fast QB who takes off and runs too early instead of moving up in the pocket and throwing. But a RB who runs into a wall and then runs sideways looking for the opening that isn’t there.

He should hopefully figure it out with a little coaching, film study, and patience.

Rushing numbers this year.

ND 22-86, 3.9
Iowa 28-89, 3.2
Ark St 48-237, 4.9
Bay 45-265, 5.9
Hou 38-240, 6.3
WV 45-129, 2.9

I think it tells me that teams with good front 7s can stop them running much. But then you have a real good pass game, so you can still score enough to win. I don't think too many teams can really shut down both.

Also, averaging 40+ rpg in conference play is nuts. Some of that is killing clock up 2 or 3 scores, but still...
