Jon Miller has a new write up on realignment...surprising and worth the read.

Its optimistic to think we would have much negotiation leverage at all if it came to this. We will turn over all of the OU/UT settlement share to the B1G if that’s the offer on the table.

With reduced shares as well? We could pay as much or more out of pocket than OU and Texas. Nebraska paid nothing up front to BIG. They got reduced shares for 6 years. Lowest amount in the first year and increasing until full benefits in 2017. Probably would be something similar IMO. I agree we have little leverage. But that would really be sticking it to us. Unlubricated.

From the Alliance press conference:

We want and need the Big 12 to do well,” Phillips said. “The Big 12 matters in college athletics. The Big 12 matters in Power 5 athletics. I can tell you we’ll be watching closely what occurs here.”

If we take that at face value, their preference would be to see the Big XII reconstitute itself and remain viable. And if that's the case, they're not going to press the Destruct button by taking the two best schools. I think they'll provide some limited help, but we're probably on our own. Of course that could all change tomorrow.

This is like the dude that says "I know Bill and Mary are having marital problems, but they are both great people and I really hope they can work it out" ....all the while knowing that if Mary ends up getting divorced, you're going to be all over that **** like mayonnaise on a sandwich. LOL

Nothing really new in the JM blog. The one idea that was interesting was the potential for the Big10/Pac12 to negotiate TV Media Rights jointly. I doubt the Big10 would be willing to equally share revenue among 26 teams. Maybe there could be a multiplier.

More likely, if the Big10 bundled the Big10 Network with the Pac12 Network from a cable/streaming carriage perspective that could significantly impact Pac12 Network advertising/carriage revenue. The numbers I found on internet were Big10- 60M subscribers in 2016 and Pac12 - 15M subscribers in Dec 2020 (down from 30M in 2017).

So if the Pac12 Network could expand its reach to 60M households, then their media rights fees would likely jump by a pretty solid multiplier. Also the Big10 could profit by taking a cut- a win/win.

The big question is how confident is the Big10 in their negotiating position with cable/streaming. It does solve a big issue for the Pac12 in getting access to households.

Thought the C class was the coupe. Fun to drive, exciting to look at, not real practical.

S class is the sedan. Bigger and less sporty, but more comfortable, and a lot easier to get in and out of.

They could pay us a 50% share for 5 years after their TV contract kicks in and we'd still be making more than we do now. Then step it up 10% a year.

One thing to think about...before it was about cable subscriptions. It's not now. I think that MBB will actually play a larger role this time. KU fans would buy up streaming packages all winter to watch their MBB team. And ISU fans would as well. They can't just force the BTN on to cable subscribers like they used to. Paying $15 a month for Big 10 Now or whatever it's called from November to April adds up.

This is a really good point. I realize more fans watch CFB on ABC, CBS or ESPN at the big time slots. But there are roughly 36 hours of televised football for each school during a season (12 x 3). But with Basketball there are roughly 62 hours of televised basketball. So having programs where their basketball is must see, has to have value.

As bad is J-Hawk football is, J-Hawk fans and avid CBB fans will turn in to see KU play conference basketball games. To a lessor degree, a strong program with a rapid fan base, ISU MBB and WBB has value for television networks.

I am getting sick ..specifically...of hearing Purple Hawk Condon promoting the constant theme that Iowa State/Big XII just need to grab some other teams and live with reduced income. That fruitcake can't hide the glee in seeing ISU relegated to second tier status. He is an Absolute hawkeye shill...who just can't bring himself to think ISU/Kansas belong in the same league as his beloved hawks. Truly sickening. Jon Miller is great..Condon a punk loud mouth hack.

I am not a Miller fan but he’s got the same line of thinking I’ve had all along. Anyone using eyeballs and markets as a reason ISU will never get an invite from the Big Ten should be muted and ignored immediately. It’s not 2010. It’s not even 2018. Things are shifting all the time and 20M has been lost in cable subscribers alone the last few years.
His observations bear a ton of credibility and point out some of the obvious ones to why ISU to the big ten make sense:
1. AAU institution, academics don't matter to the Silly Southern League but they will matter to Big Ten
2. Top ten football program now, 21st nationally in attendance, 3rd biggest stadium in big 12
3. Historically a really good basketball program

Now the fact we are a good fit for them doesn't mean the Big Ten has to make a move soon. But when and if they do (if they're going to add two teams or four teams, we SHOULD be on their short list).

I like Jon Miller and I think the unbearable tavern hok type fan is part of the reason he quit the Hawkeye Nation gig. He got never ending sh%$ over there from them and I think he just had it. He also has a non sports career full time.

Jon makes good points and I have nothing against him. The fact he admits we are a good fit for their league is just an honest and common sense take. Any Hawk fans that don't want it or think we are a poor fit are just lying to themselves.

How sweet would "The Game" be if we were both in the same league? It would be cool for sure.

Plus, the fans in our neighboring states would be blown away by visiting Cyclones. I remember going to Madison in 1993. They loved us. We had a common enemy. Got free food and drink all morning while tailgating.

WVU is the current target for the ACC (this is new, he has told me for years that they were hoping to add tx & nd - which is not happening now. The idea was, once you add those two you reopen the contract and cash in. The ACC deal is getting worse and worse every year, they need to add someone, anyone to reopen it and get market value for the current teams. They are desperate and must add, WVU makes sense geographically and have natural rivals in pitt, vt, uva, etc.). So, ACC is going to add, but likely only one for now ...
...

I will wait for it to be official but some of the things he has said make sense. His comments were that geography and rivalries matter more this time around to the conferences and are being considered to:

1) Maintain ticket sales (attendance is becoming a concern for many schools)
If the ACC is adding, I wonder if they'd invite Central Florida. I don't think their academics are where they'd like but that's a huge school with an ever increasing base, but probably not with FSU. I just think UCF doesn't get left out this round but who knows. I have no idea, but I think the ACC really doesn't want WVU in their league, but if it means opening up contact negotiations, I'm sure they'll swallow whatever pill they need to.

As far as the attendance mattering, if this is true, it's huge for ISU. 3 BIG10 schools within about 3 hours. Illinois and northwestern and Wisconsin are like 5-6. Adding a natural regional rival means almost another guaranteed sell out for 3-6 of those teams. And that's not factoring in Kansas.

And as far as the bball mattering this time....
I read somewhere, sorry I can't find the source, but as an example of how little basketball matters, KU's football team brought in more $ for broadcast rights than their basketball team did. It's all about football if it's about the money.

Jon Miller is an idiot. Spare me the flattery, this is the same guy who used to call Iowa State "Ames College" and hang out with a political nut job on his radio shows.
and he changed so give him some credit. I don't act like I used to either, thank goodness as I was a freaking maniac.

Jon Miller has kind of done a 180 as a human over the last decade, and this kind of seals it. He was gleeful about ISU getting relegated in 2010.

Go listen to the podcast he did with Williams last year. Guy has really grown and it’s hard to not admire that.
This is correct. 10-12 years ago when Miller and Deace had their morning radio program and that CyHawk TV show, John was very much a typical Hawk fan who was still living “the streak” that had ended 10 years earlier. He routinely minimized the Clones even when the facts didn’t warrant it. I think he had an epiphany after he went off the air and moved to Tulsa due to his wife’s health issues.

Trent is sooooooo excited that we cobble together a great basketball league ...and then let football slip down a level. Apparently. Conlon knows we are not going to any power 5. His plan will keep ISU at a level of bare subsistence..and not competitive with his beloved hawks.
