Now - someone else put our bench together... This team is going to look incredible!

The problem (a great one to have as I see it) if Diallo commits to the good guys is in regards to shooting and spacing the floor. Can Diallo shoot? I've seen videos and I doubt it. Hoiberg has shown he prefers offenses with 4 shooters on the floor and at least a "stretch 4". McKay basically sets picks at the top of the key and rolls to the bucket, posts up or gets his points off hustle rebounds. I think our offense could suffer if McKay and Diallo play at the same time and neither can shoot. Their players would sag off them and help.

It'll be an interesting conundrum if we indeed land Diallo. That's why, in my opinion, we might not actually see better results with Diallo than without. Only 5 guys can play on the floor at once.

I have faith in Hoiberg, and he has shown an ability to tailor his system to his players. However, everything has been predicated on spacing so far and all of Hoiberg's teams have been filled with good shooters. It would be intriguing to see how he changes his system to accommodate playing Diallo and McKay at the same time. They are seem to be very similar players.

I'm seeing a lot of "Fred likes this", "Fred does this", "Replace", stuff...and I don't like it. Hoiball is a philosophy, a state of mind, a lifestyle. It doesn't matter if we have 5 7 footers that never shoot 3's, it would still be Hoiball.

If we don't have 4 shooters next year guess what? Hoiball.
If we start both McKay and Diallo guess what happens? Hoiball.
If we decide to go small and start MM, Naz, and Cooke you know what we're going to do? Hoiball.

Fred is heavily recruiting Diallo because he thinks Diallo will work in his system. If it sacrifices offensive production, I'm sure it will help keep teams like Baylor from crushing us in the paint. Instead of being worried, you should trust Hoiball.

Diallo is a little raw offensively but does have good form and touch from 12-15 ft. He isn't asked to do a lot of that as he plays simular to Mckay in King of ******'s offensive system. I am confident that Fred will adjust his system or stager minutes minimizing the time that both are on the court next year. Both are high energy players and could benifit from splitting 20 minutes at Center and playing 5ish minutes at the PF/C position per game.

I expect Burton to be more than just a off the bench contributor next year. He has a BDJ/Hogue/Kane slasher/postup/rim finisher skill-set hybred that we Fred will want to have in Hoiball next year. Assuming his shot will improve under a year of ISU staffs coaching I expect him to average 20+ minutes a game next year. Remember he was a top 50 recruit out of HS for a reason.

I think what you're suggesting will work beautifully, if either McKay or Diallo are willing to sit on the bench to start the game. It's hard for me to imagine a big time recruit being willing to stomach that at ISU.

Hoiberg's offense so far seems to be two man game pick and roll / pick and pop. He likes to get guys in good positions to score - good spots where they can make a play. Thus, we see a lot of iso and NBA-style offense where he basically focuses on getting guys in good positions, and then just says "go to work" / make a play.

I have faith he'll make it work if we get Diallo. It will just take some different looks than we've seen lately if McKay and Diallo are going to spend long periods on the floor together, I suspect. I'm intrigued to envision what that will look like.

Spacing works both inside out and outside in.

I think a lot of you have in your mind that just because he is a top 10 recruit he is going to come in and dominate. Look at Cliff Alexander, he was the #2/3 recruit in the country last year and barely played before getting suspended.

Miles Turner, the #1 recruit - he comes off the bench for a team that was behind ISU in the standings by a wide margin.

I think most of you have Diallo looking like Anthony Davis in your minds. What's wrong if he came to ISU, was able to play behind McKay/Niang - still getting 25 minutes a game - BUT doens't have the pressure of being star and he can grow into his own. Realistically we are going to be a top 10, maybe top 5 team next year with or without him. If he shows his talents on a great team he can still be a lottery pick. Or he can come back to ISU for his sophomore campaign and be the man.

The key is if the Big 12 coaches can pick us 4th in the preseason poll. We always finish 3-5 spots higher every year...so 4th can get it done (potential B12 champ and the 1 seed that can come with it). There's no way we get picked top 3 even though we arguably return the most talent and have a history of plugging in new star players...it would make way too much sense. They way it's done is you pick Weber in front of Hoiberg or you pick ISU 8th.

What if we're pick #3 or #2? Do we end up #0? Or god forbid #-1?

I'm going to have to see it to believe it from Williams and Cooke, those guys have been off the court for a long time considering the surgeries.

2017 is their year to shine IMO.

How long had McKat been off the court?

Hallice Cooke is a HUGE addition to this squad as well. Don't forget that if Thomas keeps gaining more confidence, that's going to help a ton as well. I've also heard Darien Williams is a great player and Deonte Burton looks like that physical forward who will clean up the boards and get the garbage points that we need. With or without Diallo we are loaded next year. It's definitely a great time to be a Cyclone fan! Before we get too caught up in the hype for next year, let's focus on getting back to the Sweet 16 again and hopefully making it further then that.

Too late, dude...I'm waaaaayy caught up in the hype.

This ^^^^

From what little I've heard of Burton, kid has a good shot at breaking into the starting lineup...he's a natural mismatch for defenses and brings an "attack the basket" mentality and freakish athleticism, something we need more of when teams throw everyone out on the perimeter to chase our 3 point shooters. If he isn't starting, he will be a great contributor coming off the bench...if his outside shot has improved he'll be VERY hard to keep of the floor. So many pieces to play with for Fred, and so many opportunities to create mismatches...which is his forte. If everyone is back, giving Fred that kind of talent is just not fair to the rest of the league!
