Hali is the best basketball player we've had but JT had better handles. Just like Jake Sullivan is the best shooter we ever had.

To be clear I think Tinsley is the better ball handler. Tyrese is the better passer.

Tinsley was like a generational playground legend ball handler and Tyrese is one of the best passers we've seen in the NBA (both style/flash and effectiveness).

Sorry if this has already been noted. Had to look it up, but Rick Carlisle was the Pacers head coach for a portion of Tinsley's time there and an assistant during part of Fred's time as a Pacer.

I still remember Tinsley having like 21 assists in a game as a rookie. The only knock on JT really is that he wasnt much of a shooter.

Even on "flash" Tyrese is one of the best I've ever seen like Magic, Pistol and Joker. It's not like he is just a steady take care of the ball guy like Monte was for us or a Stockton in the NBA. I think he's a better passer than Tinsley both results and style points. Other than Jokic he's the best full court passer in the world too.

Basically he gives you the Tinsley wow but with the Monte assist/TO ratio. Then his "jump pass" is a straight up statistical revolution or anomaly statistically, we'll see in a few years if there are lots of PGs doing it.

I told you I was really bummed about Tyrese's injury. And you post this. More bummed. I didn't realize he had those kind of highlights!

More than ever, I hope he makes it fully back. What a talent!

Isn't it great we can reflect back on a few of the Cyclone greats? We have been fortunate.

Who will the next great Cyclone PG be? Lipsey is a fine one for sure, right now. We only have him for 1 more year! :(

I couldn’t have said it better. Tinsley was a great college player but he is not at Haliburton’s level. Cyclone fans underrate Haliburton because the team sucked when he was at ISU. He shot better than 50% overall and 40% from 3 pt while averaging more assists and less turnovers than Tinsley in his sophomore year playing for the worst college team in the nation.
You can be the best player without having the best handle.

exactly true. But the reason Hali is underrated by cyclone fans is a big overall reason. The team sucked. And then he got hurt and left. Tinsley just made the team champs both years. 2nd year was basically him and a bunch of ham and eggers. Winning matters when evaluating legacy.

Kind of wild trivia:

A quick search and it looks like his closest wins in Hilton were his senior season:

*11/21/00 Opener vs. Morningside (OT, 102-97)
12/5/00 Southern Miss, 69-67

*They beat Missouri by 5, 86-81 in 99/00 but at least not in OT.

All in all that's dominant.
Supposedly Larry did just about everything he could to lose that game. He didn't think he had the team's attention and thought a bad loss would light a fire and make them bend to his will. Part of the story goes that ISU was behind and there was a timeout. The guys come over and Larry says, "You got yourselves into this, get yourselves out of it." and sent them right back out onto the floor.

I cannot attest to how much of this is factual and how much is urban legend, but it seems about right.

Just so I am being consistent I will add that winning doesn't mean you have the best handle either...

Wait, are people really saying that because Haliburton is a better PG than Tinsley, that means he has better handles? McGrady is just saying Tinsley had the best handles. Guys with great ball handling skills can be turnover machines sometimes. It's not like turnovers happen in the NBA very often because a PG dribbles it off his foot.

Haliburton is a far better NBA player and PG than Tinsley, but we're comparing a super athletic, super long great 3P shooter to a 6'3 kind of squishy Tinsley that wasn't that good of a shooter. Tinsley's handles were what made him into a long time NBA player. If he had anything less than top 1% handles, he's not sniffing the NBA.

There are a hell of a lot of better shooters than Jordan, yet he's pretty clearly the best (what used to be called) shooting guard of all time.

Why are you coming up with this strawman argument about Haliburton? The conversation was that Tinsley had some of the best ball handling, not just at ISU, but in the NBA. I have no idea what your point is in bringing up this comparison. No one claimed Tinsley was a better all around player.

I recall hearing that in the first practices with Tinsley, the other players were getting hit in the back of the head with his passes because they weren't aware of what he could do with the basketball.
