“Several weeks ago, I was shocked to learn that I tested positive for a stimulant that is banned by the NFL. I have never knowingly ingested a banned substance, but like most players, I take nutritional supplements. Unfortunately, I now know that supplements are not regulated and thus may contain things that are not listed on the label. The NFL policy is very strict, so I have chosen to take immediate responsibility. I look forward to participating in team workouts, training camp and the pre-season with my team. During the suspension, I will work extremely hard to stay in top football shape and be ready to contribute immediately upon my return. I sincerely apologize to my teammates, coaches, my family and fans for the impact of my mistake on the team.â€￾

Boilerplate for each and every guy that gets caught. I'll never buy the excuse "didn't know what was in it" from guys at this level regardless of which school they went to.

FYI as much as I like Knott. He didn't really own up. He made it sound like he owned up but he did not. Owning up means you admits that he used the banned substance and will not do it again. It's basically like telling your parents you were drinking Near Beer when you were in high school and you won't drink it again.

I never bought the "I didn't know it was banned" explanation with any PED users and I don't plan on starting with Knott. As a professional athlete you just have to know what's going into your body.

Supplements don't require all ingredients be put on the label. Thus it's somewhat likely he actually didn't know the was a banned ped in the supplement he was taking

He said just that, he took something that was banned and he accepts the consequences, nobody will ever know if he knew it was banned before he took it.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. Even though he's one of our own, it does seem plausible that an undersized white guy trying to make it in the league could have been trying to get an edge.

If he isn't getting it directly from the team or an approved offseason trainer like AP Sports then he is doing it wrong

I thought he was looking pretty huge when I saw him at Foley's in NYC. My friend and I even discussed the possibility of him using steroids.

Anyway, I await the day when PEDs are the norm and we don't care anymore. Or the day when they do blood testing every day before a game (or weekly in MLB/NBA/NHL). Let it all happen or really enforce it.

I don't believe Jake or any other athlete that says what he said. They aren't all lying but I sure as hell ain't falling for it. They are educated from the get-go.

I also don't particularly care what other people do to their bodies.

That's not an excuse. The NFL has had a Supplement Hotline for players to call for almost 15 years now. They can tell him if it's been approved or not. If it's on the approved list, and he still tested positive, he can appeal. If it wasn't on the approved list, and he took it anyway, that's his fault.

Again, good excuse if you fail your pee test at work. Bad excuse if you are a professional football player.

This is what I'm hoping for. These guys are destroying their bodies already so a few additional supplements aren't going to change a thing. I can only see it as beneficial for any sport.

It should be noted that I just watched Bigger, Faster, Stronger on Netflix a few days ago and my view on steroids has shifted from neutral/impartial, to pro-steroids.

Good post.

Like all things in a gray area, either the punishment needs to be worse so people actually quit doing it, or just legalize it. The slap-on-the-wrist system does not work.

In this day and age, if I were Jake, I would SUE THE ***** out of the manufacturer of that supplement. Unregulated or not, if there are items that they put into the supplement that ARE NOT listed on the ingredients they are liable for heavy heavy damages - especially to pro and collegiate careers. If he doesn't do that, it's pretty telling, IMHO.

It's the NFL. If you want something the team will provide it for you and more importantly let you know if it is banned or not.

The NFL would give you the best of everything within the limits of the rules. They have the best nutritionists, strength and conditioning staff, and medical staff available.

I love Knott, but this doesn't look good.

I'm honestly a little disappointed. It's not that hard to imagine people doing it though. :(

For clarity's sake, I took his defense as "you can't really tell what's in this stuff I'm taking" rather than the "I didn't know it was on the banned substance list" line that a lot of people are talking about.

No he made it sound like he accidently took something. Thats BS. Way to much money, Doctors, and Nutrisionists involved to not know what you are taking

i have always been under the impression that 75% of pro athletes use PED's. i dont care, its their body, and my entertainment.
