The other thing to check out is any issues with AT&T. Last I knew Mediacom uses AT&T servers so if they have an issues, so does Mediacom. Sometimes it is out of their control.

All I know is once I switched to OpenDNS all of my networking issues went away.

What did you need to do for this? Change the dns on your router? If so, what did you set it to?

The opendns site isn't one of the lucky ones getting picked up at the moment

Oh, and I'm having the same issues as everyone else... I first noticed it last night. I restarted my computer, modem, and router, and then I could at least get to CF but it was noticeably slower. Same thing tonight, I had to restart first and then it worked. I suppose I should've restarted just one instead of all three to try to pinpoint the problem...

This is the exact same thing I am experiencing. Last night was having issues with Mediacom all night. Got up this morning and everything was working fine until about 5:00ish and then the same issues popped up.

This is really starting to tick me off. Two nights in a row where Mediacom has sucked balls on providing internet service. I remember when I cancelled my cable to go to dish and they were quick on the trigger to offer me three months at half off to stay. I may just call tomorrow and demand some sort of credit to get me to stay and put up with this crap they're pulling.

Maybe I am being completely naive, but is it weather-related? And if so, can Mediacom do very much about it?

Mediacom has been having problems with their DNS servers. Your best bet to fix this permanently is to just go to OpenDNS.

Change your DNS Servers on your router or PC to:
Primary: 208.67.222.222
Secondary: 208.67.220.220

This should fix your problem.

Has any one tried this yet?

My wireless seems fine for the most part some sites do load a lot slower than other. In Ames with the same issues as described on previous posts. Mediacom experts told my wife to replace the cable from the in house connection to the modem. They also gave me a ethernet cable also. I got it to work somewhat but it is still slower than a snail.

EDIT: It did work! Changed it first on my router, didn't work. Changed on PC, worked!

Yeah you might need to reboot your router to make it take effect. won't hurt to change it in the PC though.

I Left the router (talking to mediacom side) on auto, but put the DNS addresses in the server part, then changed them on the PC as well.

I couldn't put them in the router (mediacom side) without giving it a static address.

Does that sound right?

Depends on the router. Some let you specify a separate static DNS server, but some may only let you use the automatic ones assigned via DHCP.

Sorry computer illiteracy creeps in. OpenDNS? website? A little help pleeeaasee!!!

Opendns.org

The internet uses numbers called IP addresses to route and move data around. Sort of like a phone number for a server or client. DNS is the service that converts "friendly" names like Cyclone Fanatic to those addresses (74.119.232.225 in the case of Cyclonefanatic.com). Sort of like a phonebook does between names and phone numbers.

It's a fairly simple system, but Mediacom apparently is incapable of running one, as theirs has pretty constant problems.

OpenDNS is a service that provides DNS for free without having to rely on Mediacom's. It also allows you to manage what hosts get resolved so you can effectively block bad sites as well.

If you change the DNS server settings in your router or PC to use OpenDNS's servers instead of Mediacom's you'll probably be happier in the long run :)

Nothing is working now. Posting via blackberry, which ironically is routed through my mediacom wireless.

Posting on my iPhone too. OpenDNS numbers did not work, although my modem's upstream/downstream lights are on, online is blinking, and link is off.
