IT Guys: Internet Connection Problem

Before talking to a worthless customer service tech guy through mediacom I wanted to see what the actual experts had to say about the problem.

I recently switched to mediacom cable internet. The speed is remarkably faster than my old earthlink internet. I'm using a wireless router from netgear that is about 3 or so years old. Don't know the model. The modem is Scientific Atlanta. I dropped earthlink because I was constantly having to reset modem once a week and it was slow but never had this type of problem with it.

The problem I am having is the internet connection seems to be get dropped quite a bit. It doesn't go down. It just drops and I can't open up a new webpage. Right now I can get on CF but some websites I can't load the page. If I tell my computer to disconnect the internet connection and then reconnect it usually solves the problem but it is annoying. Sometimes I have to completely restart the computer and then my internet connection is fine. Right now it says it's only local only and then sometimes it says local and internet in that currently connected to window thing in the bottom right hand corner. If I'm on the internet continuously I don't have this problem but when I step away from the computer or do something else for like 10 minutes this problem seems to occur everytime.

Do you guys think this is a mediacom problem, mediacom modem problem, netgear wireless router problem, computer, or other..or have no freakin clue because I didn't give enough information?

Thanks for any advice or help.

And not to be mistaken with the other Mediacom thread, I'm in Eastern Iowa and this has been happening for a couple days now.

Are you using Dell Control Point? Or do you have a Dell computer?

Mediacom is having issues. I'm in the same boat. CF is the only page I can get to load right now.

Would not be surprised if it is a DNS problem. Which would explain why some sites work and others do not.

There are forums on DSL Report that is specific to each provider (including Mediacom). I would head over there and see if there any widespread issues.

Past that, try switching to OpenDNS.

It could be many things. It could be
- your router dropping the connection
- your cable modem having signal issues
-could be a mediacom DNS issue
- mediacom having problems upstream from you

To check out the first two, try these
- when the connection issues start, try to go to your router's address (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)
-if you can reach your router, try going to your cable modem's diagnostics page (usually 192.168.100.1) and look for a diagnostics page that has signal levels. Take a screenshot and post that and i or someone on here can take a look.
-DNS issues- can try switching from the DNS mediacom provides to opendns or google's dns servers. Theyre usually better, but its a bit more complicated to change, so if those other things dont show a problem, might look at this.

Mediacom forum - dslreports.com broadband community is the link for the mediacom forum. This is a GREAT resource for mediacom issues. There are several who can help diagnose issues, and several mediacom staff who can help if there is something up-stream of you.

it could be a lot of things.

this is curious, though - "If I'm on the internet continuously I don't have this problem but when I step away from the computer or do something else for like 10 minutes this problem seems to occur everytime."

i'd start by setting the power management settings to always on, turn off any screen savers, etc.

then i'd start eliminating hardware from the list of suspects - start by removing your wireless router from the equation.

I'm also having issues in Urbandale w/ mediacom

I think there's something wrong with their DNS servers; I can find some sites (like this), others it's like it doesn't even try to find out where they are

I have Dell Control Point and had numerous issues until I updated my drivers, I'm not insinuating this is the case but just something to keep in mind. Then again, Dell Control Point is a complete mess.

Thanks for the input guys. I still have my earthlink hooked up so I just switched over to them. For only having 1 mb download, it seems pretty close to Mediacoms 8mb speed. Whatever...I just want good quality internet that doesn't go down.

I'll post a screenshot later tonight when I switch back over to mediacom...if only I knew how to get a screenshot?

Issues w/ Mediacom-- is it regional? (Western, Eastern) I'm in Central IA and have not experienced any issues.

The other thing to check out is any issues with AT&T. Last I knew Mediacom uses AT&T servers so if they have an issues, so does Mediacom. Sometimes it is out of their control.

All I know is once I switched to OpenDNS all of my networking issues went away.

Oh, and I'm having the same issues as everyone else... I first noticed it last night. I restarted my computer, modem, and router, and then I could at least get to CF but it was noticeably slower. Same thing tonight, I had to restart first and then it worked. I suppose I should've restarted just one instead of all three to try to pinpoint the problem...
