I said I went to quite a few basketball games this year even though I hate the sport. I do have a problem with all the people who complain about the baseball players being jerks. Honestly, I wouldn't know.. but have you ever met Curtis Stinson, Will Blalock, or Anthony whateverhisnamewas... I have. They were all jerks.. They are good athletes though, and are popular guys around campus so I don't blame them. They could easily get away with it. I am just tired of hearing people call out one sports members because they think they had a bad attitude, then not liking the sport and saying it can't succeed because one of them treated them like a dork... whatever....

On a side note I went to the Nebraska Creighton game tonight... Spectacular, tailgating and atmosphere. I don't see how a game between ISU and Iowa played in Des Moines couldn't be as good, (if not better).

I said that a lot of the baseball players were jerks because I got to deal with a lot of the athletes since I worked at a bar and the only time I ever got the comment "Come on aren't you going to hook me up I play baseball for ISU". I told them no then a whole group group of them got upset at me. I never had a football, basketball, wrestler every ask me that. We also had a group of baseball player always try to come over to our frat to party but never would bring any beer over or give money so after a few times we asked them to do one of the two or they need to stop coming and they asked us why we are being D1cks.

Having played baseball at ISU the only people I heard use that line at bars or with girls were guys that never on the team or got cut at walk on tryouts... My favorite was the next year the number of guys I met through female friends that actually tried to use it as a pick up line... Then my friend would say, you must know him then... that was always fun...

I never said the baseball players were jerks, frankly I never met any of them while on campus that I knew of. Honestly I could care less how big of a jerk they are. I don't go watch football games to watch a bunch of nice guys, I want to see people get hit in the mouth.

Just because you buy tickets to basketball games, I don't think it gives you the right to call them thugs. I'm sorry that some of the basketball team members "treated you like a dork" and that's why you feel it's ok to take pot shots at them.

Now that I think about it, a few dumb freshman may have tried to use the 'I play baseball' thing, but it didn't last long till they were put in their place...

I agree that we would have a better chance at succeeding in Division I hockey than in baseball, mostly because of location...

...It's a sport, like baseball, where warm weather schools have a definite advantage over us.

Agree on the disadvantage, but it all comes down to recruiting.

For the arguments regarding weather... how does the Univ. of MN have such a successful program?

Along with UNI and Iowa for that matter...

Look at the ISU Baseball Club last year...

The 2006 season was plagued by weather form the very beginning. Of the 25 scheduled games, 13 were cancelled due to bad weather conditions, leaving the Cyclones to only play 12 games, finishing with a conference record of 5-6, and an overall record of 5-7. The 2007 Spring team will return a strong core group of 16 players, setting up what should be a very exciting team next year.

ISU Baseball -- History

They don't have the funds to travel and play in other areas. All northern baseball schools travel to train... like a MLB spring training and play in many southern tournaments to start the season. The weather here is no different than MN, Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State... yada yada yada.

Why do people keep brining up baseball, it aint coming back! I would much rather see hockey as a varsity sport than baseball, at least that is a northern sport, and much more exciting I might add.

Exactly!!!

However, MN, Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State... yada yada yada have far more resources than Iowa State has as far as athletic budgets go. They can afford the additional travel expenses invovled with playing baseball in the "north".

This has already been posted and discussed but....

Mid-Iowa Newspapers - Scott Nulph: Why baseball shouldn't come back to ISU

ISU Softball this season...

Let's start with 41 straight road games to begin the season. That's right, 41. ISU traveled from Mississippi to Louisiana to Texas to California in search of games and warm weather.

And now in the last two weeks, the Cyclones have had four games either postponed or canceled outright due to bad weather. Two of those were home games, of which ISU was only going to play 14 anyway. Plus how can you even compute how not being able to practice outside during this recent storm surge has hurt any progress the team made during its warm-weather sojourns.

I was pointing out the fact that a Club Baseball team does not have the budget. There is no reason to think that, if done correctly, a Big XII baseball team at ISU would not have enough of a budget to travel.

I know you were talking about Club Baseball.

I am just pointing out the ISU does not have the resources necessary to support another non-revenue generating sports team similar to softball, soccer, golf, tennis, swimming, etc.

The cost for ISU to spend the first 2-3 months on the road for tournaments and then possibly having the few home games we would have cancelled due to Iowa's unpredictable weather, is simply not feasible right now. Give Jaime time, he has stated that he'd like baseball back in ten years.

Those teams you mentioned have greater attendance at football games, the major revenue generator at most univeristies that supports other programs...

1. Michigan 110,026
12. Nebraska 85,044
21. Michigan State 70,819
38. Minnesota 52,207 (also draws over 10,000 fans for hockey behind only Wisconisn and North Dakota)
44. Iowa State 46,171 (and rising :yes4lo:)

That would be your opinion, hockey is a good insomnia cure IMO.

I like hockey enough to watch the playoffs...pretty exciting stuff. However, if you think hockey is boring you should attend a game live, preferably where you can sit down close to the action. It's a good time and waaaay better than on t.v. That being said, I can see how people can say hockey and baseball are both boring in their own ways.

The baseball team never played 42 straight road games, maybe 12 at most and the budget can be managed, heck even Grandview can afford to go south for a Spring trip... My junior and senior year our first games were at Air Force, in COLORADO SPRINGS... If they can play baseball in February anyone can...

Colorado Springs' average high temperature is 11 degrees warmer than Ames in February. (45 vs. 34)

Once again... weather should not be an argument. Ames is no different than a lot of other places, it's in fact better than a lot.

Unlike in Iowa, in MN the entire High School baseball season is played in the spring before school is out (except the State Tournament which is the weekend after usually).

High School teams travel 30-40 miles during the week. College teams travel 300-400 miles or more in order to play games. This costs much more.

Weather becomes an issue when we have to pay for the team to travel so much in February and March to play in the 'south' due to cold weather in Iowa.

Plus look at Minnesota's hs schedules. Teams begin playing games in April and end with the state tournament in June. The University of Minnesota begins playing in February with all home games through the end of March being played at the MetroDome!

Glad to see the bring baseball threads never die!!

A few musings:

It is all about revenue generation and FOOTBALL drives this revenue generation. If you want to blame someone for no baseball...blame Dan McCarney.

Gender equity is the big problem. Gender equity (along with general apathy) is the reason there are very few DI wrestling programs. I know this is tough for an Iowan to swallow but there are precious few geographic areas / states that care at all for wrestling. I don't want us to terminate the wrestling program but the bottom line is baseball is a national sport and wrestling is not. Just look at the coverage from ESPN...college baseball gets far more than college wrestling. As for Soccer and Hockey...come on...no one really cares about these sports as witnessed by the limited TV exposure both get.

Anyone that did not go to a baseball game while at ISU because they "did not know where the field was" is a total moron. The field location was fine...very near Campus Town (a place most ISU students were able to "find" when they wanted a beer or some food). Just for the record, I did go to some games at Cap Timm...they were free and I saw Robin Ventura...he was a tremendous hitter in college.

1. Well I didn't point to you specifically when I said people were calling baseball players jerks.
2. I didn't say that I bought tickets, so I have the right to call them thugs.
3. Actually they hooked up with some girls I consider friends. They treated them like crap. I won't say names but I was told that one night one of them got a little more physical then they needed to be with a girl.

So yes, some of them are thugs.

What a way with words you have, moderator.

On a side note... I just wondered why so many people are so against it, one million is alot of money, but chump change to bring back a "major" sport. With the right marketing it could easily be profitable, especially playing in the Big12 which is just as good as the SEC in a sport, for once. Besides, money actually doesn't mean a whole lot with baseball. Look at the teams who have found themselves in the world series, I would say ISU would be middle of the pack in terms of overall athletic revenue for those teams year in and year out. The good thing if JP brought back baseball is that you know he would find a coach who could make them hightly competitive.
