Is starting in Louisville a good thing?

Generally teams assign assistants to scout and prepare game plans for the upcoming teams they will face in the tournament. Since ISU will be in Louisville with UK but not facing them until the very end of the tourney I am kind of wondering if Fred will be assigning one of his assistants to scouting and preparing a game plan for UK from the very start. What do you think?

Highly doubtful. Kentucky is one of sixteen teams that ISU will face *only* if they make it to the championship game. That will be the very lowest priority on Fred's list. He's got limited resources, and he's going to spend them wisely. Scouting UK when there will be gobs of film on them that can be perused, if necessary, would be a colossal waste of those resources.

Good question...I suppose if it is legal....I am sure he does not pull a Beli-cheat!

The team has played in the Yum Center before so that is a good thing. None of the players have though. CFH said the hotel is real close to the arena as well.

I doubt we will scout that far ahead of ourselves, my guess is Fred will want to keep our focus on the teams in front of us. Alternatively, I still think playing here will be good as it appears Kentucky fans like us a lot and the more people cheering for us throughout the dance, the better.

Need to scout SMU. Louisville is a good draw and will be true neutral court unless your team is playing Kentucky.

I'm calling it now. UK will not be playing in the NC game. Somewhere, somehow, a team is going to shoot the lights out and hand them a loss.

Of course you scout SMU - and UCLA as well. But Iowa State has more than 2 assistant coaches.

I thought I read somewhere that the year Fennelly's team beat a highly rated UConn team in the tournament years ago some of the coaching staff spent time during the season breaking down Husky game film so he had a plan in the works if they ever had to face them.

They cannot "live" scout UK. The only team that can live scout a team would be their upcoming opponent (Purdue/Cincinnati). If the staff would want to go find film and start to break it down that way it is totally legal.

At this point the staff will focus on UAB/SMU/UCLA, get as much info on them, and go from there. After the staff has as much info that they need on these teams then the video coordinator will start working on potential future opponents Gonzaga/Davidson/Iowa/Duke. From there, they could probably work on some UK stuff since everyone knows they will probably be in the finals, past that it would be a crapshoot to who comes out of the other region so I would think that they would wait till sweet 16 or after to get the other region teams.

Is this in jest?
Imo no chance we commit valuable resources to a game that would require first beating several very good teams over the next few weeks.

So no members of the ISU coaching staff are allowed to be in the arena and attend either of the UK games? If that is truly the rule that seems kind of silly.

That's what I was wondering. Also found it funny that this was listed right underneath the "arrogant ku fans" thread.

There is a big difference between asking one person on a staff of eight to get an inperson look at a team when you have the chance and having the entire coaching staff spend their time preparing for a team that may be way down the road. ISU obviously has to have their entire attention on every next game, but that doesn't stop teams from having a coach assigned to a game after so that the game plan is ready to go. Having the chance to look in person at the team that would be the unquestioned largest potential obstacle to the team's goal of a national championship (if Fred is genuine that this is their goal) could be a huge bonus. It will take a herculean effort to knock them off.

I still would like a link to the rules about that since someone mentioned that teams could only scout their next opponents.

Go ahead and take your shots, guys.

They will play in the NC game and lose because a team from Ames is going to shoot lights out and hand them their only loss. That is my dream scenario. :spinny:

Didn't want to start a new thread, but it kind of fits with this thread (where we start)...Yardbarker article saying we're #3 in easy paths:

http://network.yardbarker.com/author/article_external/18460046?widget=true

Funny part is Dook is #1, in ours it's says it's easy 'cause Dook isn't that strong, and in Dook's it says we're bad defensively. Not arguing either point, but funny that we're both in weak brackets because of the other.

I like how Self stated the NCAA tourney....it is a 2 game weekend tourney...Win 2 and move on....Just look at it that way...Can't be looking ahead, or worry about your potential opponent. Win 2 and move on!

It would have been nice to play close in Omaha for our fans, but if the seeding committee was going to force the issue with a KU-Wichita match-up, I'm kind of glad ISU is going elsewhere and avoiding that circus.

This is A LOT of people's dream scenario for this year's tournament...and not just Iowa State fans either.

You'd also have to believe a majority of the nation would be cheering for ISU to take down UK if that scenario came true. Those betting probably wouldn't be brave enough to pick ISU, but general college basketball fans and pretty much anyone who isn't a UK fan would want it to happen.

It's only 3 weeks away but there is a ton of things that need to go right between now and then for dreams to be molded into reality.
