Not sure if Manning should go or not but the play calling makes no sense. Does an OC sit down with the HC and explain way he called the plays he did?

Ah yes, those were the days where in December we could all sit back and say ..........yep, we beat Iowa" as we watch our team get smoked in the Smurf Bowl.......or playing no bowl at all. There is a time for "moral" victories......and then there isn't. Historic 3rd quarters and beating Iowa in September aren't those.

I love Danny Mac for what he did......but 1998 (I was there) was a long time ago and I would just assume not go back to where one Saturday afternoon in September makes a season. They lose to anyone from here on out not named Oklahoma, I will be much more upset than yesterday.

'just as soon'

Anyway, nobody is suggesting this. However, if CMC is great, and ISU is having unprecedented success, it should, once in a while at least, include beating Iowa. In the meantime mostly this discussion is about how awful the O has looked through 2 games with the best team ever on the field.

Find a guy with a little Imagination calling the offense would be nice, its getting old watching the same game plan of trying to out execute everyone. I am not saying we have to the Chiefs, but I do think it would be good idea for our offensive coaching staff to watch a couple of their games to just see how you can run an inventive offence.
Last couple of years I have been watching the coach from Costal Carolina and I love what he is doing, maybe give Brile's kid a shot after his offense ripped about the UT defense on Saturday.

When was the last time we throw a screen pass or ran a counter play to stop back side pursuit or at least slow them down?

This "player execution" argument comes up year after year. If the players can't execute year after year, there is a coaching issue. Since there doesn't seem to be this problem with the defense, it suggests to me that there is a problem with the coaching on the offensive side.
Then how do you explain last year and the beat down in the bowl? The players (for whatever reason) were able to average 30+ a game and had best season in school history. I am usually first in line to blame coaches but with everybody returning and the abysmal play on offense I am blaming the players. Coaches aren’t running lazy routes; throwing off back feet, giving the LOS to the defense, or being careless carrying the ball or not hitting available holes. If there were new players, then I could see more coaching blame - but these kids have been in this system for yrs and they r playing like freshmen.

I swear to God, it feels like he's stuck in 2003 when he calls a handoff inside the tackles on every 1st down. Breece should get a lot of work, but the touches he's getting are doing him no favors.
There is no creativity to our run game. Try some pistol formation. Use Milton or another speedy receiver on jet sweeps or spread motion reverse.

The spread is great when a team's OL can dominate, but IMO otherwise the handoff is slow developing and the mesh points basically left/right of where QB takes snap.

campbell has earned the right to call his own shots and he's been willing to fire Toledo guys (the old strength staff) if he thinks he should.

But I will say this, god forbid if Campbell leaves after this year, you don't ******* hire Manning as his replacement.

I think when(or if) MC decides to leave that Nate would be a natural replacement.

Doesn't everyone hate their o-coordinator? Who has a popular o-coordinator? When was ISUs last popular o-coordinator? Steve Loney?

My son observed that the 1st game vs. UNI was like playing Techmo Bowl -- we only had 4 plays. :)

At one time, seen as some sort of pinnacle of achievement to this day, unprecedented success meant beating Iowa after 15 straight years of mainly bad football.

However, consistently beating Top 10 teams and winning stuff like Fiesta Bowls, IS unprecedented success FAR beyond anything the Iowa series has ever offered.

I can't believe people don't get that.

I just wonder ... why not both?

Why do we have to have slow starts in order to be good later in the season?

Maybe there is a reason that I don't know about but I REALLY wish we could beat Iowa on the way to being successful later in the season.

I should be more clear: I'm not OK with any loss early, and this season especially there's no reason for the team to not be able to come out crisp and ready to go. This was the year to get rid of that stigma and it didn't happen.

BUT it's now time for bigger things.

Iowa, UL, any close matchup.

If we had an OC and ST coordinator performing at Heacock's level, we'd have a couple 10 win seasons already. That momentum opportunity cost is tangible, and given the impact of branding and perception with realignment looming, the current OC being average is costly

well in a perfect world, sure. But Campbell is not a perfect coach and the players are not perfect.

it is ******* lunacy that we actually have people questioning matt campbell. He is far and away the best coach we’ve ever had. We should all be praying every night that he doesn’t leave.

I wouldn't be opposed at all. He is REALLY young though.

He should probably spend some time sucking up to Jamie like TJ did.

Good to see you have gotten over that bitterness. Didn’t you want Campbell fired after Game 1? Thought I remember that from the 2016 in-game thread. Level-headed.

i was at that game so I certainly wasn’t posting in that thread.

I did think it appeared that no one coaching had seen the game of football before. I was obviously wrong! And I’m not ******** about Campbell now unlike a not insignificant portion of this board.

and why shouldn’t Nate be nurturing a relationship with pollard?
