Can someone who knows more about football than me explain Manning’s refusal to ever place the QB under center? I would think it would be easier to run out of this set as the RB gets the ball quicker and is moving forward on the handoff.
We have seen about the most under center play calls this year in probably the last 15 years. People don’t go under center anymore.

The reality is Tom Manning is the best OC we have had in a long time. I do think offensive scheme is a problem and it’s always the same problem of not playing to our strengths in some games. As others have said we saw that when he wasn’t here too so that tells me changing OC isn’t going to change anything.

We played like crap on offense yesterday but it was a group effort. The offensive gameplan restricted us. Our receivers didn’t do a good job of getting open or making catches. Purdy didn’t do a good job of making decisions and Breece made an awful mistake. There was no one thing that you could have changed that would have changed the result. They just were not ready to go.

This "player execution" argument comes up year after year. If the players can't execute year after year, there is a coaching issue. Since there doesn't seem to be this problem with the defense, it suggests to me that there is a problem with the coaching on the offensive side.
Well said. This isn’t about an anomalous 4 TO game. We often lose the TO battle.

This is about the offense rarely showing up unless the defense needs it to.

Execution is a huge issue. Maybe because we don’t have any core convictions? The opponents offense dictates what we are. Which is not all bad, but Manning has no feel in how to call these UNI/Iowa games. And the players struggle with timing trying to pillow fight.

Purdy didnt earn his rep by being a game manager pocket passer, and our offense gets mediocre when you add in Manning’s bad play sequence

The continual poor execution on ST tells me all I need to know about the non-Heacock coaching.

CMC has done a GREAT job quickly filling the pipeline and ridding the program of the toxic Rhoads culture. The player evaluation and development is very good, largely due to player retention. But outside of Heacock and Co, everything is Dan McCarney level on the field and not something we haven’t had before.

Good thing Mac finally started beating Iowa. Or else our losing streak to them would probably be 38 straight games by now...

Ah yes, those were the days where in December we could all sit back and say ..........yep, we beat Iowa" as we watch our team get smoked in the Smurf Bowl.......or playing no bowl at all. There is a time for "moral" victories......and then there isn't. Historic 3rd quarters and beating Iowa in September aren't those.

I love Danny Mac for what he did......but 1998 (I was there) was a long time ago and I would just assume not go back to where one Saturday afternoon in September makes a season. They lose to anyone from here on out not named Oklahoma, I will be much more upset than yesterday.

It’s not a coincidence that the one coach we had that turned the series was indoctrinated to the series while playing/coaching under Fry. He’s the one that fully understood what it means to the Hawks, and had his program match it.

Meanwhile under this staff we come out flat against UNI, Drake, and Iowa

I think Manning is as dull as it gets, but after rewatching the game there were some opportunities there and Purdy missed them.
-On our FG drive, on 3rd down at the 10 he panicked when under 0 pressure and threw the underneath route when if he held the ball 1.5 seconds longer Kolar was breaking wide open uncovered in left corner of end zone.
-On the long interception he threw it late and short, causing the open WR to have to slow down, to try to come back to the ball.
-On the slant int he threw it behind the WR causing the tip interception.
-On the second tip interception that ended the game, was a result of his height and staring down the target.

Purdy is a middle road QB, a great cyclone, has a lot of wins but he doesn’t have what it takes in the big games. Many Iowa state fans are delusional about this guy being heisman and NFL draftworthy. .
Remember how we lauded Kempt?
A lot of the missed reads are on Manning imo. Purdy never displayed elite vision or anticipation, but he’s been coached to checkdown.
He’s also always been better when scrambling and moving the pocket, allowing him to mitigate reads, arm strength and timing.
It also doesn’t help we don’t practice it against UNI

Not sure I'm following what the Kempt mention is supposed to imply?

Good thought .... I'd say when you have 11 out of 11 starters returning on offsense, you should be able to manufacture something.

11 of 11 starters returning from a team that didn't have the speed to run something last year means they still probably don't have that kind of speed.

That fans are emotional about the past.
At the time, he was coming off a successful, for our standards, season as a QB. Many thought he can't lose his position, to injury or otherwise. You can't bench a 5th year senior, returning starter from an 8 win team. Great game against OU, two top-5 wins etc.

CMC will bench Purdy if Purdy of the first 7 quarters continues. Kempt got pulled, for an injury he could play through if needed, and never got another chance.
