I'm just going on what I hear him saying in press conferences and radio interviews and such.

I don't expect him to do anything immediately. I'm not a fan of mid-season firings. But I would be surprised if major changes are made after the season.

What do you expect him to say publicly? He didn't bash the strength staff before giving them the boot.

I have no idea what he'll do with Manning. I think if we are being honest, we can all see that there are two sides to the argument.

I hope that this is a discussion we ARE having in January.

I guess I agree. Calling for firings now, now, now is wrong. If, as you suggest, very serious conversations are had in January, and changes are made, that will be a good thing.

But something needs to change!

I don't really care about people calling for firings now (although this post started on September 11th, so that seems a bit much). But some people in this thread seem to honestly think that he should be fired today.

The OL coach played OL at Toledo and then was a graduate assistant at Toledo before coming to ISU with Campbell; no prior coordinator-level coaching experience. I guess he was either supposed to figure out how to coach a P5 OL by himself, or somebody else on the staff who knew something about coaching OL was supposed to mentor him. Now, in Campbell's sixth season, ISU has a veteran offensive line that often looks dysfunctional. Time to try a different approach. It doesn't look to me like the staff presently has the expertise to improve this unit.

For reference, Baylor ran for nearly 300 yards again OU last week; ISU had 51 today...
Just an FYI, Meyers is / was considered one of the top under 30 coaches I think by I think footballscoop etc... Not that means anything I know but those guys are well connected in the industry and they generally know what opposing staffs and people think about coaches.

Do I think the OL has done a great job? no. And I don't totally understand why we went with a 4 guard offensive line approach when Foster wasn't horrible and for my money, yes, he was coming off an injury - but when Remsburg when into the starting lineup last year the offense started to click. All because of him? of course not but I thought he played really fairly well for a freshman.

-----------------------

I don't know that anyone HAS to be fired. But what is clear is we need a better way of protecting our base plays and developing more clear and quick answers to pressures when its not working. We need to clean up the under-carriage and maybe change out some tires.... and if CMC doesn't think Manning or Myers or up to it - okay, that's his call. But we need to adjust our game plan offensively and maybe diversify some even more than we are.

At minimum. I don't know how we can go into next year with the exact same approach.

Although we didn't do poorly offensively, it always seems we have a couple of series or plays that really kills us and sets us behind the 8-ball.
1. Second quarter. Had a golden opportunity to go up by three at halftime. Why is Purdy going into a deep drop and rolling out to his left? That one play was a 10-point swing and won the game for OU.
2. Fourth quarter down by seven with a chance to tie the game. Breece needs to have the ball in his hands, at least once. Instead, we put the burden on Purdy and have a three and out. That was a killer.
ISU gave up 3 TOs, a defensive TD, and had the lowest ypp of any team vs OU all year other than WVU. KU and Tulane were better offensively vs OU. Yes, ISUs offense played poorly.

People need to quit looking at yards and points and think it’s 1995. When you underperform vs almost every other team, then you played poorly.

I don't know where you get this. He dumped the strength staff. I don't think he is firing or demoting anyone before the season is over, but I'm not sure why we think he won't do anything.

Yes, Campbell did make changes on the Strength and Conditioning staff. Andrews was brought in after the 2019 7-6 season that ended with two unpleasant losses. The COVID year saw an improved record, but under "abnormal" circumstances. Now we are back to a "normal" year, and looking at results similar to the 2019 season. Hopefully, this one will end 8-5 instead of 7-6.

My question is, what were the perceived deficiencies that prompted the replacement of the S&C staff, and is ISU any better now (nearly two years later) in those areas than at the end of 2019? I remember a complaint about the OL getting pushed around and needing better S&C...that doesn't appear to have improved.

Below is where Iowa State has ranked within the Big 12 in total offense since Matt Campbell arrived.

YearRank
20168th
20178th
20187th
20195th
20203rd
20214th or 5th

Yes, it's been a disappointing season so far, but I don't think it can all be blamed on our lack of offensive output. We're currently averaging only 19 yards less per game than Baylor, the league leader. I just wish our offensive line could be more dominant. Next season's success will rest in large part on the performance of this group.

Those are gaudy rankings...but then comes the head-scratching question on how those rankings translate to the 5-4 conference record?

Of course, Special Teams comes to mind, but I don't think those numbers explain it.
Big 12 only kicking stats for ISU:
2nd in FG%
Tied for first in PAT%
9th in average net kickoff yards (-6 yds from 1st)
9th in average net punt yards (-10 yds from 1st)
4th in average kickoff return yds (-7 yds from 1st)
7th in punt average punt return yds (-10 yds from 1st)

I think its because of the close losses, and the blow outs skew the data. We've been a lose close, win big team all year. Take just a few of those TDs or FGs from those other games to the losses and its an undefeated season... kinda drives me crazy, but it is what it is.

Lol, we can’t just look at yards and points when it comes to offense. That’s an all timer there. In our losses(except for Iowa) the defense let us down. And against Iowa, Manning didn’t turn it over 4 times.

As in year’s past, you can be good on average, but **** the bed in enough games, particularly early, it limits your season. No reason for that when returning so many players.

Special teams, too.

Unfortunately this year the defense had a couple games in which their outlier performance was costly. Much easier to give a pass after they carried the program for 4 years.

No. All the coaches review the game plan and review every play call in every situation. That said you are calling for the removal of the head coach. If the head coach, after analysis by himself and all the other coaches, is happy with Manning, then I am happy with Manning and Campbell.

I have no problem with Campbell keeping manning.

I am a little worried about head coach manning, if it comes to that.

We were worst in the conference on third down. Some of that comes down to execution, but playcalling has to play a factor in that as well

Both sides of the ball?

3rd and long seemed pretty automatic for the D to give up the first down.

Offense too: 3rd and manageable was tough to come by.
