It seems stupid to me. But I'm in the market for a new phone, so I'm waiting for the 7 to come out and I can get the 6s cheap. Or maybe the SE cheaper. I love the size of my 5s and I can't figure out if I'll like the 6.
If you like the size of the 5S the 6 will seem big. My wife has a 6 and it is harder to conceal that's for sure.It seems stupid to me. It's more likely in 2-3 generations very few mobile devices will have headphone jacks. Apple is usually ahead of the curve on these things.

We survived the elimination of the floppy disk drive from our computers... the optical disk drive is headed down that road too. I think we'll live.
Side note... I wish someone could just make a phone where the screen won't crack. They do that, they'll get my business.

The technology actually already exists. Sapphire glass is almost crack proof. The iPhone already has it on the camera lenses and home button because it's also optically clear
There is always thoughts the entire touch screen will go to Sepphire but there's either some cost or quality issues preventing it.
Source. I work for a company that makes products for smoothing out And processing sapphire glass.
To-date, the largest full-scale implementation of sapphire glass on a consumer product is on the Apple Watch. I can happily say I've owned one since it's introduction in April of 2015 without a single scratch or chip even after daily impacts on door jams and whatnot.
The headphone jack is 100 years old (literally), its time to move on. Unfortunately, people hate change/progress and it takes a company bold enough to push through that hesitation. Apple first did it by dropping the floppy and then the cd-rom across their products far before the rest of the industry, and this is one more step in that progression towards wireless standardization.
A lot of you like your ears tethered to your phone? Move your arm and the thing comes flying out of your ear? Forget excersizing with that cord dangling. Lots of laggards on this board.
The Earpods are $29.Yes the technology is old but it still works well and is cheap. Now apple can charge $150 for head phones that should cost $15.
