As someone who knows how these memes are supposed to work and what they are supposed say, I am outraged by the butchering of them on these University facebook pages.

You're not the only one. It's like the overusage of rage comics and the word "le" on 9gag and Reddit, but at least those two websites copypasta correctly. I'd wager about 90% of the ones on these university pages aren't even used correctly lol.

I'm going to plead ignorance, so please enlighten me if I'm wrong but are they meant to be anything more than mildly amusing pictures/phrases used to get a quick chuckle on a message board or facebook?

Yes, except they each have a correct format/syntax. Certain images always follow a certain format or are used for a certain situation. EncyclopediaDramatica explains them fairly well.

I mean, I get that, but at the same time if it still basically works, who really cares? Maybe I'm just old enough to fall into "get off my lawn" territory on this one, it just seems like a really dumb thing to give somebody **** for.
