Oh, my brothers and sisters of CF.

It costs to stream video for the playoffs. $400 per playoff game for boys, and then $500 for the substate final to the IAHSAA. For girls, for class 5A, it's $400 per game, and then it's $750 for a regional final. This would be for streaming on Facebook. If a broadcast entity can't sell that advertising space, they aren't streaming.

This is so dumb … Johnston is playing in Ft Dodge tonight against a Sioux City team. They are not making any additional $ at the gate by not streaming the game.

Why don’t schools handle the streaming themselves? You don’t need an outside entity to do it. It’s relatively easy to do And the equipment isn’t that costly. Of course that’s regular season. I assume the costs outline by SaraV are a IAHSAA ransom?

I admittedly pay little attention to 1A GBB until State Tournament time. North Linn is a perennial power but it strikes me they were a bigger school - have they dropped down this year? Other than that, a bunch of familiar names, though I wasn't necessarily expecting to see Garrigan sans Audi. I guess she helped them establish the program...

Not exactly sure.

If all you want is a motion camera that shows most of the court, that is what is happening quite often. If you want a clearer and more concise camera you need people there. Schools struggle to get people to take tickets let alone to run a camera every game. Now if you want an announcer for it, you are asking a lot because few people are willing to do it and then it’s a struggle to find people who are decent.

Just a point of clarification here on if you are referring to boys or girls because Iowa is of course one of the few dumb states that have two separate associations.

North Linn was 2A 4 years or so ago, not sure when they dropped. Teams like Garrigan rarely completely drop off the next year because there will be players that played with and against the previous years players and were improved there. Throw in that Garrigan “found” a center from Poky and it’s not as surprising.

I've watched a few games on the NFHS online stream. It's $12/month so not bad and I think only conference games are shown although I watched a couple of district/sectional games.

It's usually only the camera being panned with no announcers.

The school or conference must get a cut from the site since it's easier for residents in the school district to watch that then drive the 5 miles to go to the game and pay at the gate/door.

Newell Fonda is a perennial power in 1A. Won 3 out of last 6 I believe and runner up last year vs Audi. They are looking for title number 5 overall. I wouldn't count them out. They play a lot of tougher competition in non conference.

North Linn was 2A 4 years or so ago, not sure when they dropped.
Looking at old IGHSAU files, here is where they ranked enrollment-wise for classification:
18-19: #201 (166 in grades 9-11 in prior year)
19-20: #205 (163)
20-21: #214 (153)
21-22: #241 (136)
22-23: #267 (121)
23-24: #261 (125)

Not sure what happened to their enrollment between the 19-20 school year and the 21-22 school year (the years prior to 20-21 and 22-23) when enrollment dropped 20%.

In girls basketball, 2A used to go down to #248 (40 in 5A, 48 in 4A, 64 in 3A, 96 in 2A), but around 2020 they shrunk 2A by 16 teams and now it only goes down to #232. So it appears they became 1A starting in 21-22.

For a four-year period circa 2010, I traveled significantly in NW Iowa and became familiar with the small towns. NW Iowa is always well-represented at the Girls High School Tournament, so I pay more attention than usual to N-F and the schools in Orange City & Hull. The 1A's in NW Iowa are usually well prepared because they've played a bunch of 2A's and 3A's, sometimes in conference. I'm old, so I love the old small town rivalries....

Tension is starting among a local school. A local radio station started carrying the schools events (small school where it’s athletics over academics). Broadcasters and everything. Attendance started to drop at several home events. So the school is now started to mention they want a cut of advertising since they are losing at the gate they believe.
