Pella was good, but Norwalk was without their starting Qb (concussion), RB (knee), and Defensive End (Leg). It's unfortunate as Norwalk was a well oiled machine, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
If Pella is good what is Grinnell? Grinnell beat Pella 42-0 and haven't had a game within two scores all season. They are 7-0. (Got a bro on the team and proud of it lol)

Isn't there a mercy rule? they probably didn't even play the second half, or at least the 4th quarter.

For those still curious about the Ames game - in the first half, Ames had 3 pick six's and the offense averaged 1 touchdown every 3.8 plays.

In Iowa high school football, the mercy rule is to let the clock run. Once a team has a 35- point lead in the second half, the clock will only stop for scores, injuries and time outs. Incomplete passes, change of possession, first downs, out of bounds - the clock keeps on ticking. You'd be surprised how fast the game ends once that kicks in.

I've seen a lot of it this season. Xavier has put the continuous clock on six of their seven opponents, and has a total of over 80 minutes of continuous clock running this season. That's about half of all their second half time this year.

As to the original question - I am also frustrated by the lack of timely score updates online. While I'm doing Xavier play-by-play, I'd like to be able to tell listeners about other scores in the conference. It's a royal pain to get anything current. The CR Gazette has a scoreboard page, but they are usually at least a full quarter behind, and sometimes more. I don't have much time on the air to sift through Twitter, even using the #iahsfb tag.

Running clock in 2nd half with a 35 point differential. Wish they brought back the 50 pt rule.

Yeah they tried to not hurt peoples feelings by making it a running clock instead of 50 pt rule...But then teams started getting beat like 90-6.

At least the kids can still play. The running clock gives teams the opportunity to get kids off the bench and get some playing time. With the 50 point rule, they'd just call the game, sometimes early in the second half. I think they'd rather play.

Who's getting beat 90-6? It may be happening in some of the smaller classes. I know there have been some ridiculous scores in 8-man football. Actually the state changed the 35-point rule for 8-man this year, so the clock can start running at the start of the second quarter instead of halftime. I do agree, it still can be hard to make it a contest when you only have 15 kids or so on the sideline (Cedar Valley Christian, I'm looking at you). I personally think running plays in game conditions can be helpful, rather than just calling he rest of the game. But I realize there can be opinions both ways.

Xavier looks extremely good this year. I was coaching in their middle school program when a lot of these kids were in 7th/8th grade, so I got to see them "before they were stars" :). Coach Schulte has a way of getting the most out of his guys...doesn't try to do too much and just gets REALLY good at the few things that he does do.

You do the Xavier PBP for one of the local radio stations?

I guess I haven't really followed scores for the last few years. When they first changed it, it seemed like at least once a week somebody got completely destroyed. But I agree with you, I would rather have the running clock rule.

KMRY Radio in Cedar Rapids (1450 AM, 93.1 FM, or kmryradio.com). They've broadcast every Xavier football game since the school opened in 1998. This is my third season, been doing it since my son graduated from Xavier.

This Friday should be fun - 7-0 Xavier against 7-0 Cedar Falls. I'm already getting pumped. I'm hoping this can finally be the year Xavier beats Cedar Falls (they've never beaten them nor won a game in the Dome except for 2006, when they won the state championship).

My high school alma mater is now 7-0 this season, outscoring its opponents 271-39 this season. 19 of the 39 points they've given up this season came in one game. One point earlier this season, they won three games in a row by a combined score of 125-0.

Actually it is harder for us to get everyone in with the running clock rule because once you get to that point, the game gets over so quickly that it is tough to get many kids more than a couple reps. 35 pts is not that many to be ahead by to call off the dogs a whole lot. Had a game early on in the rule that we got up by 35 midway through the 3rd. Started getting other guys in. They scored. our reserve O went 3 and out. They scored at end of 3rd q and got onside kick. Put our starters back in and they scored. 35-21 was the final. There were some tense moments. Don't like it. We've had several over the years and you feel bad keeping your starters in when the clock is running, but by the same token, in today's run and shoot offenses, 35 points is not that much of a difference vs a HS 2 and 3-deep.

While I appreciate the recent tradition of DNH, they haven't played a team with a pulse yet.

Talk to the other radio guys around the league and have them tag everything #MVCFB or something and you will be fine. I believe the Iowasportsconnection.com does a very good job of keeping things up to date.

There is no denying that. Outside of DNH and A-P, 1A D3 is extremely weak. At the same time, if looking at the results of district games, both DNH and A-P are taking care of business of the weak district, with convincing wins each and every week.

October 19 is setting up to be a good one.
