This is a tough one...it's easy to say not to celebrate in the other team's misfortune, but it only takes one look at the average content of the smack board at a place like HR to see that they are ruthless in their hammering of our program. Heck, they are bringing up Sam Mack, LE, and every other indiscretion of our program right now in defense of their knuckleheads. Add on the fact that many of us have grown up with a bunch of Hawk homers that gave us grief and thoroughly kicked us when we were down, and I can see how people like seeing them and theirs suffer through something like this.

I take no joy in the fact that these young men's lives and athletic careers are severely damaged, but it was their stupidity that caused this, if true, and consequently have no sympathy either. I take some joy in the fact that some Hawk fans get knocked off their high horse by this, if even just for a little while.

This type of stuff has gone on forever. Lo Charles (think NC State dunk against Houston), was arrested for stealing pizzas from a delivery guy, so when they went to UNC or Duke, there were thousands of empty pizza boxes waved at him.

The Antlers as Missouri were infamous for this stuff. KU fans shouted down Steve Stipanovich after he shot himself.

If your players screw up, then they deserve the ridicule. I agree that second chances are deserved, just at the school where it took place. Berryman, whatever the outcome, deserved a second chance, but not here. Pierce deserved a second chance conceptually, after the UofI screwed Jennie Lillis over the way they did, but not at Iowa. DD will get a second chance, it will probably be at Iowa, and that is what is wrong (I will take this back if he is kicked off the team, unless KF has no other alternative).

The only time I ever thought a line was crossed was when some UT people made, and continue to make, derogatory comments about the traditional bonfire that A & M used to construct the week of the big game. The thing collapsed, and killed something like 16 kids.

It's part of rivalries, and whether they want to admit to it or not, we are their rival.

EDIT
And 22, let's not make broad generalizations about Coach Ferentz. His track record on doling out punishments is not especially strong. Not trying to start anything, you made a statement that KF would handle the matter. Let's look at just a sample of the track record:

Benny Sapp-5 different run-ins with the law, four times allowed back, finally the AD stepped in and said that was enough and he had to go.

Sam Aiello-forget the beating that he gave Beutjer, before his eligibility was up, he was arrested for assaulting someone with a pool cue. Yet remained on the team.

Antwaan Allen-broke an innocent bystanders jaw on the ped mall, one game suspension (1AA opponent). Somehow as fate, and Johnson county would have it, his trial gets postponned until after the season.

I like Kirk as much as the next guy, but let's not make him out to be something he isn't.

I'm all for poking at the Hawks in the name of good fun, and I may just not know the right Hawk fans, but most of the Hawk fans I do know are pretty straight forward when talking about their team, and admit weaknesses and disappointments pretty freely. They also will give the Cyclones credit when they deserve it too. Like I said, maybe I am just lucky.

I'm only going to post this once. I won't harp on it nor will I get into a mud-slinging contest with anyone over it.

It is unfortunate seeing so many Cyclone fans so excited as a result of this incident. We too, have had our own issues in Ames. One very recent (Taylor) and another that not only bit us once, but twice (Barryman). I guess the first response to that comment would be "well Hawk fans did this to us when it happened in Ames!". That's classy, maturity I'd expect to see from a 5th grader.

Keep in mind, not once did I say it was bad to discuss this. It will definitely impact their season and the ISU-Iowa game. Instead of a small chance to win the game, I'd give us a decent one (giving a slight edge to Iowa). I'm just disappointed this is a celebration..and it's not just happening here - I witnessed it first hand while at lunch today.

It's never a time for celebration when people steal from others. Almost as sad is the end of two athletic careers, both which could have been bright. They did do this to themselves, however.

This is an embarrassment, not just for those in Iowa City, but for the state too. Between Taylor and the two Hawkeye football players, neither program haven't exactly been practicing the quality moral values we boast about in Iowa.

What is even more odd, is all the finger-pointing at KF. I don't believe he played any part in what these young men did. Clearly KF is unhappy about it and once more light is shed on the situation, he'll deal with it appropriately. For those expecting him to give 'em a pass, we did give a player with theft on his record a 2nd chance not that long ago.

I am interested to see how Barta handles this. It's his first big challenge of this nature...2nd of his Iowa career (first being getting a hoops coach). I don't think he's close to the caliber of JP...so this one could get bumpy for them, especially if it's more wide spread.

Couldn't agree more ISUFan22 ! My moto is what goes around, comes around.

Let's not forget the HUD housing incident, in which his son was involved, yet Kirk used the excuse that he had no idea what was going on. That's the definition of turning a blind eye. You live in the same city as your son. You HAVE to know what kind of housing he's living in...

Darts180 - to further your point of KF's tight constraints on his players and a previous post about a big rug to sweep items under....what ever happened to Jordan Bernstein and that whole thing? The last thing i saw in the paper was he was being sought for questioning regarding the incident? Hmmmm was the homer DM Rag forced to drop that incident for fear of losing preferential treatment in IA City? It just simply disappeared...Can anyone shed light on that incident????

Simply put, Iowa fans have been all over us ever since Jason B got busted for having a beverage two weeks before his birthday - and no i realize that if he were a practice player he may have been treated differently, but, he wasn't... Coach Mac had little choice, after all hindsight said his job depended on it. From a principle standpoint i would not have let him back, but, our coaches contracts and job depended on victories and that my friends is a dubious position to be in....Values versus Job Security - how would you handle it???

Good Luck Kirk, don't worry the whole nation is onto this one now that these 2-3 morons decided to post it on Facebook....for their stupidity, they should get whatever the law and school hand down and face it like men just like JB did.....

Who knows, maybe KF will be short a WR when you get out and let you back on the squad, if not, i know Mike Farley could definitely find a spot for such a great athlete! This kid had the system by the kahuna's and didn't know it.....

From our standpoint - it just made our game with them a bit easier - but, that's still going to be a tough one.....

All i can see now is Sheda standing across from Blythe or Franklin matched up one on one with 4-5 wides and see how well the back of that new ISU jersey looks as its streaking in for another touchdown ISU 41 Iowa 27.....

Go Clones!!!!!!!!

What was the deal with Jennie Lillis? I don't remember hearing about that one.

Early on she was rumored to be "the woman" in the first Pierce incident, so that's where I assume Darts was headed. I heard otherwise from one of my neighbors, a big basketball booster and local business owner, but I'll be the first to admit I don't truly know the identity of Pierre's victim. I do agree with darts, regardless of the victim's identity, she got shoddy treatment at the hands of Alford, Bowlsby and University Administration. I personally believe my neighbor, as the female player he named at the time the allegations went public transferred to another school the following season.

I really don't think we have any right to be over the top bad sports about this thing, even though there were a few Hawk fans that live for ISU to have these kind of problems. On the other hand, I do think we can jab the Hawks a little.

I think this subject is fair game on a message board like this. In real life, I prefer the subtle approach like a nice smirk or a subtle dig. Mostly though, I like to hold back till the typical hypocritical hawk fan makes a nasty comment, then dredge this up and drop it on them. As we've noted on this board before, it's usually not the Iowa alums who are the biggest jerks, although they're well represented too, it's guys who barely got their GED.

The real question that always occurs to me after these serious incidents is does the NCAA have any regulations whatsoever regarding criminal conduct. They're such a holier-than-thou organization. They've got countless picky rules about recruiting and academic progress, but are there any crimes that make a player lose eligibility as far as the NCAA is concerned? Maybe gambling?

I got on the elevator at work as a homer hawk was getting off. When he was 5 steps away, he tuned back and said "don't say it". Man, that felt good.

Just another classless attempt by Kirk Ferentz to provide special housing and clothing for his players.

Will these players be [penitentiary] orange shirted?

I can’t help but blame the university. UofWhy is obviously not paying its players enough money. The boosters better demand changes.

They had some small bills in those photos. That’s gotta hurt the program’s image.

Do you think the hogeye players will wear credit card patches on their uniforms or bars on their helmets in honor of their fallen teammates?

Will the vikings in the Capital One commercials be replaced by Talkeye football players? “What’s in your wallet errrr dorm room?â€

When a recruit visits the campus and football facilities, do they give them a quick tour of the jail?

The things a guy has to do for a Dale Junior jacket these days. First Junior loses the 8 and now this?!?! On second thought, no way those photos were not photoshopped. A NASCAR jacket? Seriously? No way.

If KF visits them in jail, will it count as visits to potential Iowa recruits?

Squawkeyes don’t rebuild, they post bail.

Lighten up kids. It’s our freaking rivals and thieves are scum. Jump off your tower onto the dogpile. It’s a lot more fun than polishing your halo.

And yes, I enjoy a spacious view from my glass house. No worries. I just board that bad boy up when a storm comes.

Rival fans will be rival fans. How much sh*t did we have to deal with from them during the Larry Eustachy thing?!?! And we are talking about a guy who's life was on the fast track to death. I would consider this less serious than LE's thing.

Personally I think what goes around comes around. Something will happen to ISU that we will have to deal with. But hell, most of us can now laugh and joke about the LE thing. In a short time, everyone will be laughing about it.

Has anyone noticed how decidedly divided Hawkeye Nation has become? The once unified, almost cult-like fanbase that never wavered from their loyalty and support of their beloved is cracking right before our eyes.
