I wasn't part of this game (not in the stands). But I was for the Texas game in Ames a few years back. The game ends similarly. A player for Texas is at the line (and I believe this player had Iowa ties) and he misses both.

Can anyone fill in the blanks here. What year was it? And who was the texas player with Iowa ties?

Boddicker from Texas?? I remember that Cy was under the basket bent over with his *** facing Boddicker and waving his tail feathers!! HILARIOUS!! :biglaugh:

Here is quote from a Register Article about the Texas Game:

After each team missed a shot, Texas had a chance when Boddicker, an 81% free throw shooter, went to the line with 5.3 seconds left. With fans screaming and waving their arms and towels and Sullivan doing jumping jacks at the top of the key, both of Boddicker's shots bounced off the back of the rim.

"I would like to have (seen) the decibel level when Boddicker was shooting those free throws," Morgan said. "It was loud."

I'd like to hear more about Blaise Bryant. I started at ISU in 1997. I can't even recall if Blaise was a player then. I know he was a Heisman Candidate. We all know about Troy Davis and Seneca Wallace. I really dont' know much about Blaise.

Bump for the night crew... does anyone have anything to share about Blaise Bryant? The only memory I have of him is of an oil painting somewhere in the locker room that shows him with a prodigious flat-top haircut.

HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGEEEEEEEE thanks to everyone who has contributed so far... it is helping my "research project" more than anyone can ever guess.

During one wrestling meet, Chris Talor was "warming up" off in a corner when a young boy approached him with a yoyo (that the boy couldn't get to work right). Chris stopped his warm up, took the yoyo, and started to show the kid how to use it.

I know Chris didn't lose that night but I don't know if he wrestled. On occasion if the opposing team had no chance of winning, they would forfeit the heavyweight match.

You could tell what move Nichols was teaching Chris each match. When Chris came, his basic move was a bearhug and fall down. Nichols got him to try single leg, double leg, etc. Chris worked hard to be a true wrestler.

May he rest in peace.

At the time he went to ISU in the early seventes, there ws some talk to get him in a football uniform. It was stated that he also was very difficult to see around at the old Stapleton football games being so large in the head.

Andre the Giant Wrestler was 7-4 ft tall and 500 pounds and strong.

Blaise was in school when I was and I remember seeing him at a campus party drinking wine coolers. I thought to myself...what kind of man drinks wine coolers?...LOL...I thought it was kinda gay if I have to be honest. Enjoyed watching him on the field though.

I hope you have the Cyclone Hockey coach in your list of iconic Cyclones. Although I don't think he was the first coach, he came soon after and did build a true legend in club hockey. I'm certain that others can tell you about the team's accomplishments; all I can tell you is:
  • In the begining the team performed many fundraisers including selling their blood to raise money to travel.
  • The coaches recruited in Canada and offered jobs in food services in the dorms as a form of allaying the cost.
  • Their first game in Hilton was on very thin ice ..... because they was a concert or something that they didn't want to set up over thick ice. As a result they occasionally threw up sparks or fell when they skated over a patch of missing ice. The refs had a water can to sprinkle water on the patches.
  • A couple of years ago I met the guy who played center got them at that time. He was 6' 5" and I can only imagine what the goalies thought seeing him come down the ice at them.
Although this isn't a varsity sport, Cyclone Hockey has been one of the best examples of Cyclone Spirit and its tradition and heritage are second to none -- including all other collegiate sports teams.

Note that that Chris Taylor match was in Greco-Roman.

I may be mistaken - and it surely magnified the Greco outcome - but I believed his freestyle loss was more controversial:
Chris Taylor: The giant Olympian

"In only the first round of freestyle, Taylor took on two-time gold medalist Aleksandr Medved of Minsk, Ukraine. Medved had beated [sic, bested] Taylor at three other meets, but on this occasion, they fought to a draw. The 231-pound Medved was awarded a controversial decision by referee Umit Demirag of Turkey, who had penalized Taylor for passivity. It was the last time Demirag refereed an Olympic bout, as the ruling body dismissed him from his position, yet allowed the Medved-Taylor decision to stand. Both men won the rest of their bouts, with the Ukrainian taking gold.

"In Greco-Roman, Taylor faced off against Wilfried Dietrich, a West German wrestler whom he had beaten in freestyle. Gagne recalled that Dietrich had a strategy where he kept trying to push Taylor out of the ring. Then Taylor got riled up and rushed Dietrich, who grabbed him up in a bear hug and suplexed the 412-pound monster and "turned him on his back before he hit the mat and that was it. It was a phenomenal move."

The OSU game they were ranked #2 in the country. We were down by 18 at halftime at home!! In about the last minute and a half we were down by about 8 and Thigpen hit 3 or 4 threes and then fed Hoiberg cutting to the basket for a basket, foul, and ensuing free throw. I've been to a lot of games at Hilton and the moment when Alexander was shooting the free throws is far and away the loudest I've ever heard Hilton. Besides the floor shaking, it was so loud I couldn't even hear myself yelling while he was shooting the 2nd free throw. I used to have the highlights of the end of the game. I'll have to do some serious digging, but I can probably find it given time.

Everyone knows about Big Hair Blaise Bryant. He had the enormous advantage, literally and figuratively, of having Gene Williams and Keith Simms block for him at center and guard. They were 2 future NFL lineman. The line would create huge gaps for him to run through.

FINAL BUMP for the post-game crew.

Does anyone have any more recollections on any of the notes I posted in my original post? Thanks to all who contributed... it is helping me out so much... lets call it market research! If I stumble across more interesting stories, I will do a PART THREE.

Thanks all again
