If you think you could get used to driving a bus (it's really not that hard), you could work for CyRide. They are almost always hiring. You'll have to go through training for a while though (could go fast since you are not taking classes right now, a month maybe?). It's a good job though and pays well and has decent benefits. If you don't want to drive you could try applying to be a lane worker, which still pays decent and maybe you would like it more than driving.

Give it some thought!

You should consider being a detention officer for Polk County. Training is only something like 1 month of training and a couple of weeks of what they consider "jail school". I know the starting pay is pretty good and goes up pretty quick. I know that you will be making more than your friends at their jobs..and more than a lot of people with a 4-year degree.

I concur, you should give this a try. But all laneworker positions are filled as far as I know. If you have experience driving big vehicles this a flexible, piece-o-cake job to keep the cash rolling in until you move on to bigger and better things after college.

i do not have a college degree.. i have a HS diploma.. and i am in the military so if that helps any

Dude, if you are in the Guard then go out to Camp Dodge there are always jobs availible out there. There are also some Temp Jobs that you could get until you find something full time. The benifits are great and the pay is rather good.

Best benifit you never have to work the full 40hrs. For example you get paid to work out 3 hrs a week. Because most of the jobs require you to be in the Guard to have the job so PT is important.

I worked at Camp Dodge for 4 yrs they were the best jobs I ever had and can't wait to get back in the guard to try and get one of those again.

Besides it is a Gov't job everyone knows how had Gov't employees work.

i was considering being a state trooper but i dont want to take a 20 week course.. also i wouldnt be able to because i have anual training this summer

you can get out of AT for that and do a make up AT. Several Troopers I know are in the guard. And got out of AT for something like that. I had 11 yrs in the Guard I know many of ways of getting out of things. Especially split training to make it to ISU football games. Just have to be creative.

Fishing boats off Alaska are high adventure, high risk, and high pay.

Nursing aides will be in high demand as the country ages.

Driving truck for ethanol plants.

Fire fighting

Insurance sales.

Yeah if you can get an ADSW job or a full AGR job those are good things if you are looking to make some money and still have the option for school. Plus like he said you get PT time out the day to keep that score up. Talk to your readiness NCO or any of your full time personnel and see what they have available. They always need someone to file paperwork and such.

Have you applied out at UPS? I'm assuming you're physically fit, and they give full bennies with their part-time jobs.

Word of warning; those guys WORK!

I'm also at a WFF in CB and I'm in the same situation. Are you a credit manager by chance? I'm not looking to go anywhere at this point but I am curious about what positions are available in the Des Moines area because I would like to get back to the area in a year or two. I also have a job that doesn't require a degree but most everyone I've met with the same job has one. I have a degree from ISU also.

I think this is as good time as any to start a new forum for Cyclonefanatics who want to explore/research job options.

Personally, I will return to the central Iowa area sometime either next fall or the one after that, depending on how my current contract works out. And it would be cool to read about what is out there, in the DSM/Ames area, between now and then.

Do NOT go into nursing, the pay is horrible. I mean really really horrible. And unless you have an RN license or higher, you are going to get the really nasty jobs that pay even less. Expect a few dollars over minimum wage to start.

Especially with the wave of government controlled health care coming. Costs are going to get controlled even more soon, and the first place that will get cut is nursing salaries.

I always found that with the alleged nursing "shortage", wages are still terrible.

I've worked as an Airplane Mechanic, and the "industry experts" keep screaming about this "shortage", but they still pay crap for money.

Question: Would you work at a job where you had to self-finance $thousands in tools, years of (continuing) education, and get sent to prison for having a bad day at work, for $10-12 an hour?

Something isn't adding up, here. If there is a "shortage" of labor in an industry, why are wages so darned low?
