If we were looking today and KF was available, would we hire him? Forget the cross state rivalry, but on his merits? I say no:
-Poor performance past three years
-player personel problems
-perennial interest in other jobs
Am I wrong here?

Yes.

He's a proven decent head coach, and if ISU had a coaching vacancy, and KF was available, they would be foolish not to hire him.

I believe that if DM had just left, and a coach from another state with the identical record of KF applied, JP WOULD NOT HIRE HIM. How would that sell as an upgrade from Mac, and would any AD want to grab a guy who might be a witness in how an assault case was handled. Right now KF is damaged goods, in my view.

who cares how many conference championships he has won, its the big 10, intramurals brotha, He has lost to ISU time and time again, and gone 6-6 the last two years. We would hire Farley out of UNI before Ferentz

I think the next two years will truly define Kirk Ferentz as a college football coach. He just went through two down years and comes back next year having played 31 freshmen and 15 sophs this year. And those 46 include some of the best recruits he's ever landed at Iowa. Every program in the country goes through rough stretches like Iowa just had. A good coach can pull them out of it, which is why I think the next two years will define him.

To answer the question, yes Iowa State would hire Ferentz.

I can see if looking at record alone. However, if you look at acheivements, it would be a good hire.

Look at Ole Miss and Houston Nutt. Nutt has had a few good seasons with the Razorbacks, but overall a mediocre record. Ferentz and Nutt are much the same, with Ferentz having his better years (so far in his coaching career) in 3 consecutive years.

I don't think it would be a bad hire....

I agree on his achievements and I think he's a good coach. My point was not to knock KF, only observe, IF an Iowa State might not consider him, would a program like Michigan? Coaching is about being "hot" or what have you done for me lately. KF is missing that star power. He had it three years ago. He was a the top of everyone's list.

Before this season, even with '05 and '06 not great - I would've hired KF without question.

After this season, I'd probably still hire him but not as easy of a decision.

Would I take him over Chizik? Probably not, but I have nothing other than bias to support that as Chizik is 3-9 as a head coach right now.

I do remember KF's tenure starting out rather ugly...

I think the better question is...would he come here. And the answer is no. Why? Two reasons. First, I don't think ISU offers welfare housing for millioniare coaches sons who are on full ride scholarship. And second, the Story County jail is not part of the recruiting process.

Looking at achievements alone, Sonny Lubick out of CSU would be a good hire. There are plenty of coaches that have had a little success only to find they were either fluke season, or the coach hasn't been able to adapt to the changing game. Hiring a "has been" just because you have a "never was" isn't a good idea.

Of course we would. Haven't you heard? EVERYBODY wants KF and it is HELPING EIU's recruiting. Just this week he has offers from the Patriots, Colts, Bears, Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Maple Leafs, the Democratic Party, and for CEO of GE.

What he said....

KF is an excellent coach - I think most of us see that. But it's near impossible to look beyond the last 3 years record, and this year's legal woes are just the iceberg that sinks the ship.

With Chizik, you can pin your hopes on his being a hot prospect, having a bit of a pedigree, although unproven. KF is a known commodity with great highs, but his career looks as though it has pinnacled and is on a downslide. I don't know I buy that - but you can see why people would think it.

KF is a definite step up from McCarney. Not sure I'd say he is from Chizik.

Would I have hired him last year? Without question.

Am I happier right now with Chizik? Without question.

Of course we would. Get serious, the guy is a national coach of the year and he has two conference championships.
