So much to this.

Last trip to Walmart the cashier was on her phone and had zero urgency to make the line move faster.

It was egregious. No manager around. Barely engaged.

I can't stand self checkout. In the year of our Lord 2025 we can't have the cart calculate the cost of goods and we walk right out?

i thought i read where they said people want to interact with the checkers or some sh*t.

b*tch i dont want to talk to anyone, let me get in and out (giggity) without talking to a soul.

Headphones.

Even if you're listening to nothing, most people will leave you alone. If they don't, you can still act like you haven't heard a word they said.

Have you been in Home Depot lately? They have pretty much anything worth anything behind cages now. All the power tools, batteries, electrical stuff... locked behind cages. Just another reason to shop online and get it delivered.

Yeah that's true.

I worked at the Ankeny Menards when I was going to Iowa State and the theft efforts were pretty incredible. Their was a guy who would put a shop vac in his cart, and a roll of tape. He would go through the hardware area and put a bunch of small high dollar items in his cart like surveying apertures He would push the cart to the back corner of the store by the gutter supplies and take the shopvac out of the box and stash it in the racking. He would then fill the box with the stuff in his cart and then tape it shut and go buy the "shop vac". He hit the Ankeny and Southside store multiple times before he was caught.

I've been in one of those stores. The app gives you the time spent in the store.

A very quick in and out of the store. It's pretty cool stuff.

The only issue is the food items sucked. But that wouldn't be the case if I'm running in for some bird and then out the door.

I'll call people lazy for a lot of things, but this isn't one of them. I rarely use it myself, but it's a LOT more efficient than going & shopping yourself, and costs nothing extra when you pick it up. Something like $5 or $10 (plus tip) to deliver, but they also regularly have 10-20% off codes that can offset part/most of that. Plus you likely save by shopping online vs in-store as you don't grab as many impulse items.

Employees shopping online orders is probably about 278th on my list of inconveniences in a given month.

Agree with this. Online grocery shopping isn't lazy. It's efficient.

A couple of years ago they had an employee standing in the aisle with bolts and screws.

He said that aisle accounted for something like $75k in losses so they put him there to keep theft down.

******* thieves killing the shopping experience. Walgreens and CVS? I've never liked them, but I'm not waiting for some employee to eventually unlock the Old Spice or aspirin.

But only the name brand aspirin. The store brand is out there.

If Walmart would just use the Samsclub phone app for checking out I’d switch to do all shopping there. Just scan the item with your phone as you put it in your cart is awesome. You just checkout when you’re done and walk out. Obviously Sam’s has that extra layer of the person checking at the door, but I think you could do that at Walmart as well. Just get a casino level surveillance system to watch people in the store and I don’t think you’d do any worse for the theft.

Now they have the detector things at the Sams in Ankeny where you don't even have to stop at the door. The staff just waves you right through. Sams does it right in all aspects of the checkout process.

They put that in Waterloo as well. Not really sure how it works if it’s detecting items based on cameras looking ant your cart and seeing if there’s been a recent sale of them or if they’re tracking you through the store.

I’m just waiting for RF tags to completely replace barcodes so this checkout thing goes away completely.

It's amazing. So convenient that my 73 year old dad taught himself how to use the app so that he could walk right out without standing in line.

When I worked at Menards back in the 2008, I think we had someone doing the same as well (this was in Illinois). The kicker is that they then return the shop vac (or whatever it was they bought) to get their money back.

The last time I used a self checkout in HyVee literally someone hovered over me while I checked out one can of deodorant. The only thing I like about them is I don’t have to deal directly with employees. Walmart’s cashiers are just the worse- they waste so many bags and don’t even bother bagging like items together- who puts potatoes in with the bleach?!?

With Walmart+, you can use Scan and Go in Walmart stores. It's so much more efficient.
