I am very uneasy about the staff Pelini is putting together, it's all 2003 retreads. It's not like Pelini hasn't had other coaching stops since he was last in Lincoln. Are these the only guys he truly feels comfortable with, or is Pelini nothing more than a puppet for Tom Osborne? Time will tell, I guess. At least Shawn Watson (OC) and Ted Gillmore (the WR's coach) are being retained.

It's certainly very interesting and the puppet comment isn't completely unwarranted. I am hearing a lot of "past" from these two right now. Going into the past for coaches hasn't exactly worked out for a few teams in the NFL recently.

I will say Chizik did hire some coaching friends that fans had questions about. With how the off-season programs were run and the season wrapped up - looked to be decent hires so far. A different situation though as none of these guys had coached in Ames.

Lots of eggs being tossed in this basket for the Huskers. If this doesn't get turned around and rather soon - it could spell very bad news for Nebraska football.

Pelini's contract isn't signed and it was reported in the OWH that it would take a week or 2 to have a contract sign, I'm scared as hell that Pelini is going to have second thoughts about this return to the "Nebraska Way" and return to LSU.

Seriously? I'd be shocked, but stuff like that has happened before.

If Pelini truly hired these retreads, it's all good, but if it's Tom Osborne who's running the show, all bets are off. Check this little nugget out from Dennis Dodd:

Dodds and Ends - CBSSports.com

• Scuttlebutt: Wake Forest's Jim Grobe dropped out of the running at Nebraska after being told he would have to hire certain assistant coaches. If a guy is going to make a career move like that, he ought to be able to hire his own staff. Bo Pelini, though, will hire several old Nebraska assistants.

My understanding is that Pelini has shown interest in and been passed over for several head coaching positions the past few years. He wants to be a head coach. I don't see him running away from the only opportunity that he will likely get.

Guess it comes down to if Pelini wants to be a puppet or a HC. This isn't the first time Osborne has done something like this, when Solich was named HC when Osborne retired, Solich wanted to "update the staff", but TO wouldn't let him.

My gut feeling is that this will be a bad outcome for the Huskers, but it will most likely benefit ISU.

Matt Perrault on AM 590 in Omaha was saying that he was passed over by Pitt and Syracuse for a HC position. Not sure when that happened though.

Also, Travis Justice was pretty upset that the 2 best candidates (apparently) were a HC in the MAC and D-coordinator. As he stated, "That's the best that Nebraska can do? Who are we, Iowa State?" Perrault did defend the Chizik hire, saying that Pollard was the man for pulling that off.

As far as I'm concerned, we got the better end of that deal.

I wonder if he could easily run away from this one and into the open arms of...say Arkansas, UCLA, etc.

I think we should start referring to Pelini as "The Puppet" from now on, in all conversations.

If I had (or was any good at) PhotoShop, I would put together a picture of The Puppet with strings attached to his arms, legs, mouth and clipboard. Above him, pulling the strings is, of course, Tom Osbourne.

I'm not usually one to stir the pot on message boards, but I would definitely lob that pic into a thread on HuskersIllustrated, and watch the fun begin.

Did we interview Pelini? Or was he the one that said he had no interest?

Texas fans weren't exactly upset about losing Chizik, though. Especially after that K-State game last year, they were really accosting him of underperforming with all that talent, similar to the criticisms leveled against Pelini. Then after it came out that he was interviewing with us at the same time, Longhorn fans really accused him of dogging his responsibilities as D-Coordinator.

Of course, their new guy, Akina, has drawn a great deal of criticism this year as well. Mack Brown, too. Pretty funny.

I know your down in that region, but, there were a lot of Texas fans on this website telling us that they hated to see him go....

Besides, when your an assistant at one of the super powers and you leave, they believe they can succeed with any coach because the talent level will overcome bad coaching....

News flash for these schools........

NEBRASKA 2007 Season - check it out..............Talent don't win all games, the talent with the coaching wins ballgames....

Besides, Frank Solich wanted Pelini to get the job and so did a large portion of their fan base, but, the AD thought he wanted a BIG NAME to bring in BIG TIME dollars...as if they need it!!!!!!!!

Just found an intersting little nugget about a possible assistant coach for the Big Red...

9:56 p.m., from Peter Gammons
• If Darin Erstad doesn't find a job that suits him, there is word that he could return to the University of Nebraska, his alma mater, and be an assistant coach for the football team. A punter in college, Erstad was part of the Cornhuskers' 1994 national championship squad and remains one of Tom Osborne's favorite players.
