We wont lose to Baylor. They have a good defense, but those numbers are a little skewed due to their weak non-con, and they have pretty much lost to anyone with a pulse, Vandy being the exception (which was a home game). They have been blown out on the road by KU and aTm, and hung with Oregon on the road. I think we win by 10+...83-71ish.

I know this is a message board, and just people's opinions, but why do some posters keep saying "we won't lose" to someone? Of course we like our chances, but I think that's why they still play the games before they post the standings. Too many things can happen in a game, like last night's foul issues, for one. Plus we know that Baylor will come in with confidence and probably love shooting in our arena. Do some of you guys say the same thing about your kids' high school athletic teams and go home demoralized or depressed when they lose? I swear that seems more difficult to comprehend than my criticized 'cautiously optimistic but worried' approach. lol But, carry on.

Just came across this 10 teams you shouldn't trust by Metcaff posted today. Reassuring about ISU's chances on Saturday.

#4 Baylor
"It’s really simple for Scott Drew’s team. We all know the Bears are talented. The foursome of double-figure scorers Rico Gathers, Taurean Prince, Al Freeman and Johnathan Motley should keep them in most games. But the Bears are just a different team away from Waco, Texas. They’ve lost their three road games against opponents ranked in the top 25 when they played them (Oregon, Texas A&M and Kansas) by 54 points combined. The Bears must prove they can handle the road in Big 12 play."

Great...just what Baylor needed to read to get them going. Hopefully it won't matter.

After last night - building an 18 point lead against a worthy opponent with our best player on the bench for all but 4 minutes of the first half - I can't imagine the Clones not being favored in every Hilton tilt this season. (Kansas included, for you Chicken Littles.) We aren't deep like Kansas, but our first 5 can compete with anyone.

I believe the key to the winning is Niang wheeling and dealing in middle of the Baylor's amorphous zone. Baylor's success offensive rebounding (Rico Gathers, cough cough) has equalized Iowa State's transition offense therefore being effective in half-court offense will be crucial.

I think if you look at who Tech has beaten this year and who Baylor has beaten you should feel a little more comfortable about beating Baylor.

Understand the We are ISU gene runs deep in us all, and we always are awaiting the next kick in the crotch.

But right now Baylor's best win is Vandy who has an RPI of 76.

ISU is 3-1 against top 25 RPI

If that doesn't make you feel better, just remember Scott Drew has fewer timeouts to use this year :) Maybe that is why they struggle so much on the road :)

That, and getting out on the break. I'm not sure how effective their defense is this year, but you usually don't want to let them get all set up in a half court game consistently.

As you said, its an opinion, but its an opinion based off confidence. Yes Baylor won in Ames last year, but it was the first and only time they have won in Ames, and I'm pretty sure our team will remember that loss and be ready to respond. That loss not only stopped a pretty good home win streak, but it also cost us a Big 12 Championship. Knowing all that, I have the confidence that this team will respond...not to mention the fact that its at home and we are damn near impossible to beat at home.

Also, thats quite the jump based off what I said to assume what you wrote in your last two sentences, but LOL, carry on.

I was thinking that Gathers was a terror to us, but looking over the past several years, it was really just his 14pt/15reb performance at Waco that I remembered. He did go for 10 and 7 in Ames, which isn't too shabby either.

That dude just takes up a ton of space. If we can keep him from getting established down low and force Baylor to beat us from the perimeter, I like our chances. I don't see them repeating that 3 point barrage like last year.

Lockdown Prince on the outside and try to not let Gathers get a bunch of offensive rebounds and we will be good

In the locker room interview on the radio last night, Prohm talked about the need to get points in transition against Baylor.

If we can limit the offensive rebounds, I think we should be in good shape. I'm not nearly as concerned about their outside shooting as last year. And I don't think their bigs are great shooters. It is the offensive rebounds and put-back points that may hurt us.

Getting Gathers, Motley, and/or Prince in some early foul trouble will certainly help. This may be the first game in which I want the refs to call it close.

Way up there
Stop Prince, attack Gathers on our end, in the past Georges in particular has played timid against Gathers. The key is to go right at him, for one, he's extremely foul prone and rarely blocks shots and secondly, if you make him play defense, he isn't in as good a position to grab rebounds. Get Georges the ball at the high post against their zone and let him go right at Rico....all friggin' night

It seemed like Fred always had us trying to force our will against their 1-3-1 zone. The only time it seemed to work well was in the championship game of the Big 12 tournament two years ago. Niang forcing bounce passes into McKay never seemed like a good idea to start with.

Wonder if they still rely heavily on the moving screens? I've never seen a team do it more than them.

I'm not sure at all who people are going to start out guarding. We don't seem to match up well defensively on them at all. If I take a guess I'd say Morris/Medford... Thomas on Freeman..? Freeman (6-3) and Prince (6-7) are their primary offensive threats on the perimeter. Anyone but Nader on Prince ends up with another super bad mismatch.
