How to get Blythe the ball?

I think Blythe needs to learn to block better. I think Bass could have been sprung for a long TD run if Blythe had laid a block at all. The TD could have been a game changer. I am not saying ISU would have won though because everytime ISU scored KSU seemed to have an answer.

Blythe is out on the field during running downs in order to draw attention from the defense. Maybe we need to run to the other side (although I always thought Todd was an average blocker) but we can't just pull him out and negate the advantage of making the defense wonder if this is the down we're going to go to him.

On a related note. If Blythe has been deemed such a terrible blocker by CF, why is he always running blocks for punt returns?

He's not blocking for punt returns, he's in there for the rushing threat should we rush the punt.

I agree about Todd's poor blocking abilities, that's no secret.

And I won't rip you up, d4cy...some good points. The fact remains, Todd is our best offensive player and provides the most potent scoring threat. Since the game of football is about the most points and not the least, I just want us to at least make more attempts to get the ball in the hands of a athlete that can help us win.

It's no secret the more often Todd gets the ball, the more points we score.

Although I don't think Blythe is overrated. To me rated is synonomous with talent. And I think we all realize Todd has talent. What I do see is that plenty think TOO MUCH of Todd. That he's a savior and the only thing we have going for us

Amen. The guy is good but nothing near as great as most ISU fans would have you believe. He's not very versatile and opponents can effectively take him out of the game. This mob mentality that seems to be forming of "throw it to Todd even when he's triple covered" is just plain annoying.

Blythe can score, but so can many other athletes on the field.....JJ Bass, Messiah, Sumrall, Barkema, all of them seem to have the potential to hit paydirt regularly. I'm not saying not play him and that he's not a vital part of the offense, but he should in no way be THE OFFENSE people want him to be. In fact, he should contribute to the offense in more ways than just catching the ball and that is strictly run blocking for your teammates. He can help score points that way, because as you said above, it's about putting more points on the board, but who does it doesn't really matter.

I also believe we need to get blythe the ball more but the thing i have come to realize that other teams do gameplan against him because he is an amazing reciever. he is a pro talant and when teams gameplan its mainly to stop him and also to stop meyer from running(if thats not at all obvious).

Meyer needs to make sure he keeps track of two receivers on every pass play. RJ Sumrall and Todd Blythe. One of the two is open nearly every pass play, and from what I noticed last night, Sumrall was open a lot. Meyer just never pulled the trigger.
