trying to figure out my flex spend amount after a newborn...

I want to have at least $1K to cover the deductible.

After that I'm responsible for 10% up to $6000.

anyone know about what they paid total when all the doctor bills were added together?

Also, when does a child need dental? I'm leaving that uncovered for the first year I think ... there's no teeth anyway.

We were told to budget $3000 but they also told us it probably wouldn't be over 2,000.

No we were told that our's didn't need to see the dentist until about 3 to 4 years old. This is of course assuming they don't chip or knock out a tooth.

I don't recall the Hospital bill exact but I think we paid around $2000 after insurance. But that hospital bill is nothing compared to what you will face in the next few years. (daycare is expensive)

Guys, you know better than this....The bottom line is if you have to ask, you can't afford it! And if anyone ever says "we are waiting to have kids untill we can afford them". Guess what, they'll never have kids!

Are you talking about just medical for the first year? $3000 sounds about right for a delivery with no complications. If there are any health issues (cessarian birth, or god forbid the NICU), the sky is the limit. I think standard checkups are at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, and of course more often if there are any health issues. And, yes, I'm pretty sure the kid is supposed to see the dentist around 12 months, but that's a pretty simple checkup so it shouldn't cost much. You could rack up $6000 in the first year pretty easily on medical bills. Then there's diapers, clothes, food, toys, car seats, cribs...

stay at home mom for now ... we can't justify her going back to work based on what daycare costs and what she used to make. we lose out a small amount of coin this way, but overall it works out better.

On dental, even though they wouldn't see a dentist right away, I know for the insurance at my work, you can only make changes within 30 days of a life changing event. So even though the baby wouldn't need dental coverage right away, you need to add them at the time they are born. So that is something to check out.

We are over $100,000 with our 11 month old. No they dont need dental. Just dont put too much into your flex spending. I would think putting in $2000 would be plenty.

I went with $1500.

I have a knee that wants to blow out someday, so maybe I can force it in Dec if I'm short on spending the coin.

checkups / immunizations

Check with your insurance concerning these. Our insurance (BC/BS) covers these as part of its well baby/healthy child program so the check ups only cost a $20 co-pay and the immunizations including their yearly flu mist is covered without any additional cost.
