2005 Believe it or not, Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani from her début solo studio album "Love. Angel."

Wouldn't have known a thing about it, but I happened to see the video on TV that year...during a trip to France (but of course!) where they didn't bleep any of the swear words...

Always liked the incorporation of the marching band brass with the naughty language...and the impending girl fight...

OK, so largely I was checked out from modern music in 2005.

That said, I have two albums that became important to me years later after I originally blew them off as hipster ********.

The first is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s eponymous debut.

How it became important: I randomly fat-fingered it as a “similar artist” just as the ketamine rendered me useless. It was a good time. I actually think this song is beautiful, if you look past all the affectations:

The second just resonates with my inner millennial girl (I’m a GenX man): I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning

I’d rather not go into how I came to appreciate this album, other than to say I saw ‘em in Chicago the day after ISU lost to Miami in the Sweet 16 since I had nothing better to do and it was a time period I was particularly receptive to emo brooding.

Don’t judge me.

2005 The Mighty Rearranger - Robert Plant

Yeah, spent my hard-earned shekels on this one, but liked only one tune on the whole record:

I could have included this album. [Had in my head it was released in '04, for some reason.]

It was in my steady rotation for a brief period. I don't return to it often these days. Works for me more as a whole, not as much individual tracks.

A few selections:

This could fit comfortably on a Zep album:

2005 - Mike Doughty

2015 - My Morning Jacket

Happy to say I was in the crowd when this was recorded. Might be my favorite live band.

Los Lobos
“Gates of Gold”
(Sept. 15, 2015)

The band's 15th(!) studio album (and two additional have come after).

Opening track … to my ears, is a condensed version of “Ramble Tamble” from CCR’s “Cosmo’s Factory,” in the context of Los Lobos … It begins as “familiar Los Lobos groove,” then … tempo change, unexpected direction … eventually, back to the main structure.

2005, Big & Rich Comin' to Your City. Some hidden gems of songs in here that didn't get the airplay they probably deserved, especially 8th of November. Big & Rich really were ahead of the times in country music IMO when they put out their 1st 2 albums.

John Rich originally recorded this this one on his solo album after he got kicked out of Lonestar

One last one, I was going to go with "Never Mind Me" which got up to 18th on the charts but when this album first came out I really liked "Blow My Mind". This is a live version of it because I always felt there was better energy and faster pace to the song than the album version. I saw them at the Iowa State fair right after they released this album and getting to hear the bulk of this album along with the songs off of Horse Of A Different Color was a pretty good show.

And can't go without posting one of the biggest debut albums to come out in 2005. American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts" If you hear her perform these songs today compared to when this album came out her voice has gotten even better. Heard her talk about the line in "Wasted" where she had to hit the high note on the line she sings "to wake up one day and find" she had a hard time hitting that one when recording and had to really work at hitting that note just right where now she can do it effortlessly. This album charted 3 #1 hits and a #2 along with several awards

Obviously the biggest hit of the album that is the one that everyone wants to hear at her concert:

This is probably my favorite song on the album. Can't find it on YouTube but she did a concert streamed on Amazon a couple years back that is better quality than this one at Stagecoach but the twin fiddles at the end is awesome. Saw her at the Iowa State fair that same year and that was pretty awesome to see in person as her band is really good. The female backup singer has some pipes too!

As I look through 2005 just a lot of really good country albums I could make several posts but will just make 1 more post and include 1 with my favorite song from a few that stand out to me. Really hard to pick out as this was such a great year for country albums IMO.

Dierks Bentley - Modern Day Drifter. I like to do this one at karaoke sometimes

Toby Keith - Honkytonk University

Kenny Chesney - The Road and the Radio

Miranda Lambert - Kerosene (also her debut album)

Brooks & Dunn - Hillbilly Deluxe

2015 Carrie Underwood - Storyteller IMO this is one of her best albums and she got more back to recording more traditional sounding country that she is good at. "Smoke Break" may be one of my favorites of all of Carrie's songs. Watching her perform it live is a treat as she plays acoustic guitar which she doesn't play guitar for maybe 2 songs on her sets most nights. The concert at the Iowa State Fair she opened with "Church Bells" which is also on this album and was playing electric guitar on that one.

Was thinking this was from '04 but it's '05. Album: Mysterious Production of Eggs

*I post the live version of the song because I was at this performance. Good times.
