How Long Before Our (CF) Wrestling Experts Get Worried?

If we all thought watching Chizik win a national title this year at Auburn was bad, get ready to possibly see it again at nationals. Cael has Penn State on a roll and they could win the whole thing...with one-time ISU commit Taylor in the running for a NCAA title as a freshman and ISU transfer Long scoring points.

Iowa State has a great track record of sending coaches and starting winning programs elsewhere . . . what else is new. Gable, Majors, Bruce, Jimmy Johnso, Jizek, on and on and on.

Majors assistant was not too bad either.

I don't think the issue is that we aren't going to be better. We ARE going to be better in the very near future. I'm just not confident we are going to be a top 5 level team in the next few years. Everyone wants to point out our "young talent" but I don't think our "young talent" is on par with other teams around the country. Iowa is a good example--their team is younger than ours yet they are a step ahead of us. That's not a huge deal to me but their current redshirts are--they have guys killing it right now in open tourneys and other than possibly Finch, our frosh have not had that kind of success. To make matters worse, the kid that is possibly the best of their bunch in Dwieza, has yet to even take the mat due to injury.

We are going to be better. There is no doubt in my mind. I struggle to think we are going to be elite.

The days of "We are ISU" will not necessarily get the people here. Looking like the loss of Cael was just huge.

Huge????

Yeah it ranks right up there with Gable to Iowa City....

Makes me wonder if we will ever be competitive again....but then again I really dont think wrestling is all that important.

From Pollard's press release when Sanderson left: "In the end, Cael said that he appreciated everything Iowa State and our fans had done for him but he believes winning a national championship will be easier at Penn State. He said the high school talent in Pennsylvania and surrounding states is the best in the country and the kids in that area grow up wanting to wrestle for the Nittany Lions. He also said their overall athletics department resources are the best in the country."

That line bothered me. Cael was going to Penn State because it was easier?

Cael threw in the towel at ISU. He acknowledged that he couldn't compete in the state of Iowa.

Pollard was a gentleman and let wrestlers follow him to PSU.

Let's get someone who will work at ISU because it is difficult.

NCAA champ Zabriske from the Sanderson era thinks that ISU is the place to wrestle and train. He didn't run to PSU for $40,000 like Varner. Funny that Varner didn't win at the Worlds. Maybe he lost his aggressive style while training at PSU.

Do the rest of us--people who DO CARE and are posting on a WRESTLING MESSAGE BOARD--a huge favor and leave us alone, please.

Against D2, D3, and Juco opponents.

That is true for the most part but they are doing exactly what they should be doing--whipping up on that level of competition. Our guys are doing well against THE SAME level of competition but not as well as their guys. So you want to downgrade Iowa's kids...what does that say about our true freshmen? That is the top rated recrutiing class in the country and they are showing it.

Also, perhaps you don't follow these things closely, but true frosh everywhere hit the open tourney circuit every year. They generally take some lumps trying to make the step up from HS to D-1 but history shows if they can make a mark in these events as true frosh it bodes well for their future.

So again, back to my point...we will be better but I have no dreams of becoming elite in the next few years. I just don't see it.

I highly doubt those words came out of Cael's mouth. JP has thin skin and has been known to let his emotions get the better of him when dealing with criticism or adversity.

Please detail your post with facts.

When has Pollard exhibited thin skin?
When has Pollard let his emotions get the better of him?

I recall Pollard being criticized for not publicly commenting while the Big 12 was reduced to ten teams.

A press release is probably subject to several levels of approval before it is issued. I will ask the question when given the opportunity.

What I have to say is like this wrestling program...."It's no big deal".....
No, what you have to say is that you think the program isn't a big deal, and then you spout off a bunch of unsubstantiated rhetoric blasting the program.

No kidding. If you don't care, don't voice your opinion on the subject. Wrestling is basically the only sport at ISU where we have a strong base, knowledgeable fans, a winning tradition, and championship success. So to say it doesn't matter is pretty ignorant.

Cael did NOT want to leave Iowa State. He called JP many times and he never got a return phone call back stating he wanted Cael back. So in my opinion this is all on JP. He has an arrogant flare about him, don't assume this was all Cael.

It's no big deal to you, so you've posted about it at least 3 times in this thread. Makes sense.

Have you ever heard the expression "to each their own?" Try living it and show a little respect to those of us that actually want to talk wrestling. It's not that tough of a concept to wrap your brain around.

i don't know where you heard that but it is absolutely wrong. i broke the news of him leaving on cf *pats self on back* much to the chagrin of everyone here including then owner jeremy who insisted it wasn't true. jp most definitely tried to keep him here.

So you are saying he left for greener pastures. They are greener already.

I have heard from sources that are on the board of the Wrestling Club. That to me is a pretty solid source since they keep the program going.

well i trust my source as well. agree to disagree, but to say that jp just sat back and let it happen would be a fireable offense.

What exactly did Cael get out of leaving ISU. He had Big 12 titles and was on the verge of winning a National Title. He was basically the golden boy and money was not the reason that he left. I just have a hard time believing that Cael went to Penn State telling them he wanted to be there instead of here. Just doesn't add up when he could still recruit most of the kids that he wanted here. I also think its funny that when Cael was still here coaching, they were questioning is ability to coach and now everyone is basically wanting him back.
